A friend of mine is selling a large 4x4, has it advertised on autotrader and other places for £17k...
He has had a few calls from African Gentlemen, all from UK mobile No's, who have all said they want the car, even before seeing it.
They say they will transfer £500 to his bank immediately, then the rest when it clears in their account (wired from Africa).
One of these guys actually turned up to view the motor on Saturday, and when pressed, said that they were being containered out to Kenya, and that he would make £10k by buying my friends one and selling it on in Kenya...
Sounds like a scam, no??

Ask for the £500 as a cash deposit.

Sounds incredibly dodgy to me, obey the usual rules. If you have to ask...

If I were your friend, I'd say to the chap either pay full amount in cash, or cheque which must me cleared before the car is released, because IIRC some of these bank transfers can be reverse charged i.e. he'll put the money in then take it out when he gets the car.

Because I thought these nigerian type scams were internet base, opposed to a guy actually turning up.
Also, what I didnt say in the OP, they tried to haggle on the price and my friend said no.
They have just called back and offered slightly more - where is the benefit in this if it were a scam?

He just called back, and said the following...
He will transfer £500 NOW.
In a weeks time, he will transfer the balancke (some £16.5k), and when, and only when that has cleared in his bank, will he take the motor?!?!

Now, if the bank tells my friend the cash has cleared, can it then be reversed? And if so, wouldnt the bank be at fault for telling my friend the funds had cleared?

Are you saying that after the bank has told the vendor the money has cleared and in his bank account the sender can get it back?

How is this done?

Bounced transfer ..

Money goes in, 4x4 leaves, money goes out.

Tell you mate to take the £500, and post him a toy truck.

It shrunk in the post.

Looks dodgy to me, believe I am right in thinking it can still be reversed after clearing.

If you can't get cash out of them, ask for a building society cheque, then you can be in the building society with them to see it being issued.

It clears. Weeks later the bank realises it was stolen cheque, something forged, identity fraud etc, etc and they reverse it no matter what. There is really no such thing as cleared.

easy solution
Ask him to bring cash to the bank

Not everyone with a foreign sounding name is a scammer.

It can take up to 3 or 4 weeks for the money to go back out. Either get the money in cash, or dont have anything to do with him.
