Ksyrium SL - Replacement Rims

Hi,

When cleaning my bike yesterday, I noticed that the rear rim is pretty worn and probably needs replacement.

Does anyone have any experience of replacing the rim on Mavic Ksyrium SSC SLs (I think they're they 2005 model) or have I found the perfect excuse to treat myself to some Tune/Edge wheels that I hanker after?

Do you want to move to a full carbon rim, including carbon brake surface? Tubular or clincher?

As an everyday wheel with aluminium braking surface, the 7850 Dura Ace is hard to beat. For less money you can get the RS80, which is only slightly heavier due to the less expensive hub, but the rim is the same. Personally, I'm not a Mavic fan (no particular reason).

For carbon, Zipp/HED/Reynolds/Edge are all as good as each other, but all have their characteristics/foibles. You mentioned EDGE, and for my next set I might be inclined to get a set of them with DT hubs and Sapim CX-Ray spokes. DT hubs are marginally heavier than Tune, but they last significantly longer.

It's fairly easy to replace the rim if you fancy it, although you need a special spoke key and if you do it yourself you'll need a wheel jig to do a good job.

No excuse not to buy some pimpy new wheels though!

I normally build my own wheels anyway, so quite happy to have a go at doing it myself. Only thing is, I had a quick look last night but can't find anywhere that stocks them. Any suggestions?

With regards to replacement wheels, I currently live in Cambridgeshire so the carbon braking surface doesn't concern me too much. I just want light wheels that will be reasonably durable and can be maintained (unlike Carbonsports, etc). From what I've read, Edge seems to fit the bill nicely...

The rims or the spoke keys? Any Mavic dealer will be able to order them in, special order though unless you're super lucky. Park do the tools I believe.

Impossible to replace the rims. Absolutely nothing for it but to go and spend a lot more money on shiny new wheels.*

FWIW I've been racing for the last couple of months on Soul C5.0 Prodigy wheels from bikesoul.com. Similar price to the Reynolds Assault but a fair bit lighter.

Apart from the fairly crap wet braking and the odd bit of pulsing under braking (neither of which is an issue in races) they're great. Still true as the day they arrived.

Very light for a 50mm clincher - under 1400g including rim tape.

I also have some HED Ardennes for hilly non-racing use. A bit heavier than the Souls and obviously less aero but the wider rim hype was appealing.

I am not a fan of shallow section carbon wheels, particularly clinchers. The only circumstance in which you need a very light wheel is a steep hillclimb TT, and then you're better off with a tubular.

The MV32s are neither particularly light nor aero.

I would look at the upgrade as gaining aero/style rather than losing weight.

The sweet spot for carbon rims is around 45-60mm, where they're reasonably aero but not deep enough to be affected by crosswinds or overly heavy. Zipp now do a carbon clincher, although it's too new for anyone to know how strong it'll be.

Reynolds Attack are good value, as are the Soul C5.0s. Reynolds are heavier but a more established brand. I decided to take a chance with the Souls and I haven't been disappointed.

Sorry, I meant Reynolds Assault. Attacks are the budget version of the MV32, Assault are the budget version of the DV46.

Ideally clincher as I've never ventured into the unknown with tubs... Willing to spend approx £1500 if something ticked all the boxes.

You can get Ksyriums rebuilt, but I think Mavic request that all work is done at their London service centre. I got a quote from Condor to rebuild a front ES and the cost of the spokes, rim and labour was £20 less that a complete new wheel!

Yes quite, hence my suggestion in the other wheel thread recently that factory wheels should be seen as disposable items!
