Xbox red ring help

My xbox has decided to some up with the dreaded ring of death - only 1 bar is red, can anyone help me out please

It's not the ring of death then. Check all your cables are plugged in nice and tight as that's often indicated by one quadrant lighting up. Otherwise it could be a duff power unit, see if you can borrow one from a mate to test.

Mine has the 3 red rings and I've arranged for Microsoft to sort it. How long should I expect it to last when it comes back?

Could be a year, could be within minutes. Mine lasted around another year before it went again. Then I just replaced it with an elite.

It may have to get traded in against an elite then.

Mine died from rrod 3 weeks ago. Out of warranty (yes I was amazed it lasted that long), so I took it apart and tried to fix the heatsink / cpu myself. Unfortunately it didn't work, so I stripped it of parts, and am awaiting a free one from my friend (he has two, one of which he has never used, so is kindly giving me it )

I have checked the cables and they seem to be ok so its looking like an internal failure

Does it give an error message on the screen when you switch the unit on? One red light can also indicate overheating - Does it power on okay after allowing the unit to cool down?

Also, I think the Elites are still prone to the RROD, just less likely ... supposedly!
