I am going as Russell Crow in Gladiator. The only thing is all the hire costumes I have seen don't look very authentic:

for example

and

Does anyone know where I can get something more authentic? I've already sorted out a pair of sandalls so it's just the rest of it. Does anyone know if museums hire out the real suits for functions?

Maybe you could ask a German woman on the internet. Make sure it's not too big though...

could somebody translate that for me?
My name is 911motorsprt, commander of the armies from the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Spawning you to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I have my revenge in this life or the hereafter.

Oh yeah, no problem. I'm sure any museum worth its salt would be more than happy to lend you their 2000 year old priceless exhibits to wear to a piss-up.

rofl Oh c'mon - priceless 2,000 year old museum pieces being hired out as fancy dress. rofl

If its worth doing properly, go theatrical. Angels Costumiers ( who took over Bermans & Nathans some years ago) have a fancy dress section ( linky) that seems remarkably cheap ! They will also do proper movie/tv/theatre grade stuff but it would probably be much more expensive and insurance heavy for party spills etc.

I like his sword but the rest of it doesn't go. You have however jogged my memory that there is a theatrical costumiers a couple of roads down from me, and they specialise in action heroes!!
