Bonnet repair!

Hi Everyone,

This is my first post as im new here so be nice =)

I have a TVR S2 which seems to have the V8 bonnet instead of the usual V6 bonnet with air inlet on the top. Anyway my problem is it looks like where the bonnet attaches to the chassis needs some work. I have only just noticed that there seem to be wooden panels that attach the pivoting arm to the bonnet!! Is this how the car was designed or a bad repair job from a previous owner??

Also if this is an original feature does anyone know where or who can replace these wooden bits?

Phew at least its not a previous botch job. They're rotting away so wanted to replace them before they fall apart. I'll get some pictures posted in the next day or so.

If the wood has rotted there has been a thread or two on here in the past where people have made up metal strenghening plates and bolted them either side of the wood.
Would imagine could also be done with some thinner ply and lots of wood glue ?

Who would have thought you'd need to be a carpenter to mend your car

The ply is overlaid with fibre glass at its interface with the bonnet so would be quite tricky to replace in its entirety. I think that if it has started to rot I would get it clean and dry, give it a good soaking with fibreglass resin and overlay with fibreglass matting on both sides. This would be relatively simple and quick task and prevent any further water ingress and significantly increase the strength.

From the photograph in the other thread you appear to have the highly desirable S4 bonnet with the side vents, not a V8 bonnet

Clarenceboddiger made some aluminium plates to repair a bonnet a couple of years ago... he might still have the patterns... pm him and ask... he's a good bloke and I'm sure would help if he can

Haha, who would have thought a bonnet would cause so much tension i doubt i'll ever part with my little S2, lots of work to be done before shes back to her original best.

Aha! Another odd bonnet owner! Never seen one on an S2 mind you - only on S3s.

yep registration number is G39ALD - hence Gerald but I'm Norman, just to confuse all here present

Aha, news Doug, my bruv in law had an S2 with an S4 bonnet, very nice too
