My friend will have a maximum of 4k to spend on a new car in a couple months. He will be 21. We wants a car that

a) Is fun to drive
b) Is ok to look at
c) Reasonably insurable
d) A bit special (ie doesn't feel embarrassed when he turns up PH events and meetings)
e) Can be kept outside on a driveway without too much hassle.

Fire away!

"b" is down to taste. But MX5 is probably the right answer here esp re the insurance costs.

I would go for an 03 ish plate facelift Leon Cupra (180bhp) look nice, go well too for the cash

You could also consider a top spec Astra Coupe Turbo, numerous 1.8t Audi's or something cool like a well loved Corrado VR6?

3 door Golf,

1.4 or 1.6 for insurance purposes. 1.4
Nice looking and respectable car, nothing to be embarrassed about.
Wont attract the wrong sort of attention either.

On a good day with a light tail wind, £4k or just little more, might even get you a new shape that hasn't been to the moon and back.

That's a good call! Haven't driven one, but they're very overlooked apparently.

Cheap to run, chain driven engines and pretty economical too... plus as standard they are great and can be pushed really hard without getting into too much bother.

Good call indeed. I used to work for Nissan when they were new, and they are a very good drive.

It would be very hard to find a nice one. £4k would easily buy 2 average ones.

Very good, I'm pleased with the results and it's been under an hour. Good call with the MR2 and the Cupra, and the more leftfield stuff! Thanks allot.

If you look around you can eventually find one. It took me six months for me to find my old GTLE. The only thing that stopped it being immaculate was corroded wheels and a few light swirls on the bonnet. Otherwise it was brilliant. Very tight and economical.
