Unsure of which bike to get.
Discussion
I have kind of narrowed it down to two.
Dawes Edge XT

Or
GT Aggressir XCR
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/...
I have a budget of about £750, no more really (GT is pushing it). Any Alternatives?

Merlin Malt 4 can be had for a cash price of £746.95. merlincycles.co.uk
Always received good reviews for an allround mtb from people - there's a few on here.
If you're looking in Halfords then check out the Boardman range of HT's. Great components spec but frame geometry is more Race/XC than Trail. Not an issue if you plan to ride trail centres/bridleways/towpaths. Frames are good quality too.
Also worth checking On One as you can get an Inbred for the £750 mark. Again a good Trail bike. Can't remeber the web address.
That all said you can't really go wrong with the vast majority of HT's at this price point. Giant, Specialized, Scott all have good bikes.
It's more important to get the right length stem, width handlbars, saddle and grips than an XTR rear mech. Visit your LBS during the week and not at luchtime, the weekend or after 4.30pm and talk to the staff. They'll have time to be able to talk to you as they won't be busy with people trying to squeeze in a visit during their lunch or before they go home.

I'd be looking long and hard at a Genesis Core 20 or Core 30 (although the 30 is £799).
Really great value bikes and better forks than the shonky RSTs or Zocchis on the bikes you have suggested.

I second this, I bought a Core 20 and am really pleased with it. It was £700 in the shop but I negotiated a £70 cash discount, and with this in mind you could buy the Core 30 for £800 and maybe get this down to around £720.Really great value bikes and better forks than the shonky RSTs or Zocchis on the bikes you have suggested.
