Just had a call from this number from an Indian chap claiming to be from HSBC.
He knew my date of birth and postcode (and mobile number) but was asking for mother's maiden name or memorable name. I tried giving him part of it, but that supposedly wasn't enough. He wouldn't confirm which product it was in relation to either.
Googling this number seems to give conflicting stories regarding how authentic it might be.
He claims they'll write to me now.
HSBC has no useful contact numbers that I can find to see if it's one of their numbers or not.
Genuine or not?

Try calling whichever call centre number you would normally use (or not) and ask if there's any kind of 'problem' with your account.
I had similar and thought it was dodgy as fook, but when I called First Direct the (UK) call centre confirmed there had been some 'suspicious activity' on my credit card they were following up on.

If anything like this happens, get a number and call them back.
It could be someone from a call centre who has scribbled down your details and is "trying it on" from home, or someone who has bought a half set of details from some poorly paid call centre monkey and is trying to get the other half.
Re-spacing the numbers brings up diffrent search results, one of which is this:

I would say it's legit.

When I clicked on the number my Skype opened.
That's because:a) You have skype
b) You clicked on a phone number

Skype installs a plug-in for IE that turns phone numbers into 'skype links', you clicking the number is like a speed dial on a mobile.
Just as if I put 0800 000000, it'll probably make it a skype link.
