European break down cover?

I have just had a look at European break down cover for Le Mans, and am getting quoted roughly £60 for the single trip of 5 days! Is this normal? I have faith in the car and will be taking a selection of tools and spares just in case, but for this amount i think i will risk it without the breakdown cover.

I will get it home somehow

The amount you pay will depend on your car, I payed £60 last year for my 1989 Audi, but this year it's about £35 for my mates 4 year old Volvo.

I suggest RAC from what I have read on the forums, and I have broken down in France, the AA no help, some chaps from Huddersfield....Top chaps.

Think i'll be going with RAC for my '92 Eunos Roadster, had a thread on this a while back, £65 isnt a lot in case something does go wrong, wouldnt like to think how much it would cost to get there/home!

If you insure your car with Hagerty they do european breakdown cover for 30 quid, and it lasts for the length of your policy

ADAC - pan European cover for 12 months, EUR 80.

And applies to the driver, not just the car, so I could be in any of my cars and still be covered.

If you break down in the UK then the AA come to the rescue, as dad found out when he had a small fender bender last year - top service, good price.

My 1999 328i with AA is £41.Had to haggle a bit but i think thats a good price.

I went with RAC again for my car £33 my car is over twenty years old.
Its the peace of mind, thing for me gets us and the car back to the U/K.


I hope we do not have to use it.

Hi Lewis - hardly dare put this is in writing, but I don't often take European breakdown cover for the Chimaera in France. I'm not sure whether its because I have blind faith in the car, or just that I love being in France so if I have to stay longer because the car breaks down then I am cool with that!

It may be a bit late in the day, but you could try the ACO - some of their membership packages include breakdown cover, or I think you can buy it outright. Good luck with the ACO website though...

The thing that always got me with Euro breakdown cover was that the small print says they will write your car off it that's cheaper than getting it home!

Already an RAC member (personal) and was charged £42 for the week for a 2003 Rangie which has form with them.

Their basic recovery was £39 but the extra £3 gets you and your car repatriated.

This most certainly is NOT a TVR bashing post - please don't think this for a second, I love them to bits and joined PH to buy one all those years ago

But, having done 13 driving trips now, 6 of them long European ones. On every single one of the 6 long trips I did, without fail, a TVR came back home on a low loader each time, and a couple of others we had to nurse home. I love them to bits, but I think it's, urmmm..."brave" to not have European cover

Having said that - you seem to have done alright so far

I used the ACO Breakdown service once, it entitles you to a single call-out for a tow truck to either fix the problem or take you to the nearest dealer.

Yep, I reckon I have! Can't last can it!?! In fourteen years, I've never not got home with the car under it's own power. And I drive a Cerbera too and we all know how 'senstive' they are .

I get annual breakdown cover with Europ Assistance through quoteline direct for £59 which covers UK and European travel. Saves taking out separate cover for the Le Mans trip. Never had to use it though.
