Apart from having someone complain about my driving (another thread) I also sat in a country lane for ~45 minutes waiting for a dog warden to catch a stray in the middle of the road.

Has anyone else encountered this situation, and how long would they sit and wait?

She was trying to entice this dog close enough so she could get a lead on it with biscuits, but (a) she was a bit ineffectual at it and (b) the dog was pretty canny.

Anyway, for a while my fellow motorists were surprisingly tolerant of this, then one or two drivers (both the type of driver to have a reflective jacket on their passenger seat back, oddly) decided enough was enough, barged down the side of the assembled queues, spooking the dog into running away. At which point the rest of us went, leaving the dog warden standing in the middle of the road.

What was odd was that this warden didn't seem to have a plan B, so the pattern was a loop of: warden offers biscuit, dog takes biscuit, warden brings lead out, dog backs off, warden offers biscuits, etc.

Why did any of you allow yourselves to be held up for an animal? When did dogs become more important than people? Does a dog warden in fact have any powers/right to hold up traffic?

Well if it's in the middle of the road you can't just run it over.

More to the point, why would anyone in their right mind sit in a jam for 45 minutes when they could just help the dog warden catch the bloody thing and be on their way in a matter of seconds.
  • Well if it's in the middle of the road you can't just run it over* I doubt it would sit there and let you, so driving on would have little effect on it, or you. As to your second point: Exactly!

I offered my help, but the warden said that if anyone went near it then it would scarper. Some biker did just that and it ran off down the road.

I rather like the dogs so I wanted the saga to have a happy ending, but in hindsight, warden seemed unlikely to ever catch it, so it was just a amtter of which motorist would lose patience first.

As some dogs have no road sense at all it is quite a risk to drive towards one in case it goes the wrong way or freezes to the spot.
risk to what? My car would survive a low speed dog impact, and that would let the dog warden go home early too.

I wondered how long it would be before the emotive doggy-woggy anthropomorphic bullst would start.

I like dogs and would help but there is a limit where traffic control should be called in due to lines of traffic. On another note, I had this one day on the way to visit family.

Visit passed all fine as well and on return home riding through the fields at about 0700 a farmer decided to open the gates on both sides of the road and let the cows cross. This was traversing the A354, not a small road also fast. Must have sat there for a bout 20 minutes while the cows though if they should cross the road or not. Eventually they did but leaving behind a big track of POOOOHHHH, I had just cleaned the bike.

Suffice to say that the farmer did not acknowledge the traffic, pulled the ropes from both sided of the posts and got lost in the fields with the cows.

Really? I was wondering when the 'Just run it over, it's only a dog' bullst would start.

But you wouldn't be doing a full bore launch at the dog, only about 1mph.

You do, but clearly in this case it didn't get run over, did it? ttyourself.

While we're dealing with the hypotheticals, what if said dog warden was holding up traffic on a small country road between a shotgun-wielding sociopath and the only armed response vehicle in the county..?

I think it's called being human.

I've seen the whole town centre come to a standstill before now when a mutt was loose, and it was the public who stopped, got out and caught the mutt, to hand it back to the owner who was a young girl who was beside herself. One driver did toot his horn, but that was something of a mistake because two of the lads who were trying to catch the dog were big chaps, and they walked over to have a quiet word..... But this all took about 15 minutes.

if this happened today, in Eckington, I nearly ran the thing over earlier. It was running up a A road "pretending" to be chased by the cars, it kept looking back to ensure said car was still chasing. Mental dog, but funny

Nope, I drive a van and have a reflective jacket, but not hanging on my passenger seat.

There's a farmer does this near my village. My hours changed and I'm so glad that I now miss his 0730 closure of the A30 for 15 minutes at random intervals.
