You can put stripes in with a broom - it's only the way the blades of grass lie.

Yes you can use a roller,but it's not such a good idea to use a heavy one.

All that will do is compact the ground which can stop the rain being taken in,unless of course you are trying to make a Bowling green or Cricket pitch.
