Oh no, not another 'what car' thread?!

OK.
I would like to change my dull Mondeo Hatchback for something more befitting of Pistonheads - something I can be proud of!
I have a budget of about £5k (Mundeno plus a bit) and need something that will do a reasonable MPG (25 ish is OK but not 18!!), but it must be heavy enough to occasionally tow a 1000kg trailer (OK, caravan - there, I've come out!!), and must be suitable for travelling to work every day and also a family car. I don't mind a smart looking Diesel but I fnacy the sound of a 6-cylinder petrol!!
Volvo V70 or Audi Estate spring to mind but are there any more interesting options I haven't thought of? The first person to put MX5 will be shot!!
I can hold my head up a bit as the fleet currently included a Defender and a Golf Cabrio.

Jag S-Type.
You can get a decent 2003 2.5 or 3.0 V6 for that. Official fuel consumption is about 29 - so 25 should be achievable. Should be pretty well sorted by that age.
If the styling isn't for you, have a look at similarly aged / engined 5 series.
Both will give better handling and more fun than the Mondeo, and both will happily manage the odd caravan journey.

Agreed. Mind you the Mondeo gets a lot of stick but chassis wise it's a better IMHO than anything in the same sector from the VW/Audi stable, Alfa, Saab, Toyota, Merc etc
BMW may get the nod for being RWD but there are very few family saloons that handle as well and the much maligned Mundano
