As a birthday present for my mum, I am trying to put a family tree together. Ordered a copy of a birth certificate which came through today but I am stuck on deciphering what this word is. I was thinking it was Grist, but what do you think? The "G" was the same as the word "Girl". But any help appreciated.

Frances Eleanor Manley formerly ?????

It does look like grist to me as well - but part of the G is missing.

I would also suggest that after Eleanor the next name is Hanley, but im not too sure. It's getting more difficult to tell with each time I look at it.

Thank you smile It's Manley as that was her married name in the end. But I agree, the more you stare at the curly writing, the more it seems to be something else.

Have traced her on the ancestry website and have just ordered her marriage certificate. So interesting all this family history malarky and so much easier now you don't have to go trawl through all those huge books. My mum is going to love this present as they got stuck on finding a birth certificate for my great nan when they started looking before it was all online.

Not to me, it doesn't. Old school scriblings can be confusing though wink

Should be in the 1911 census then, but I can't find it - www.1911census.co.uk

But the annoying thing is now, is that there is also a Francis Elenor Grist.... who matches up on a birth certificate around the same time. Although in the 1902 census it reckoned she was 24 and born around 1877 (husband was just 20), but looking up birth dates, seems she could have been born in 1873 so was maybe a few more years older than him... perhaps she lied as maybe wasnt the thing to do back then, marry a younger man? Who knows, but will no doubt hopefully find out.

Anyway, once I get the marriage certificate that should give me a bit more info as to her parents so I can match them all up.

Are there any other lower case 's's on the document to compare? If it is not an 's' but an 'a' the word could be 'great'.
