If its a T350 what I do is get a big flat head screw driver and from the passenger side push the bonnet catch forward (towards drivers side). you push the bit that the cable goes through.
have a grope around under the steering column, there is a gap and you'll feel the cable that is connected to the release catch, pull the cable rather than the catch and mine pops on open every time.
