Some numpty hit my 'vette while it was parked in the company car park. They didn't try to find me or leave a message to say they'd done it. Unfortunately I don't think there is any CCTV recording of that area of the car park. I don't know who did it and although the chance of finding the culprit isn't great I'm going to have a damn good try considering repair cost will be in excess of £750.

As this was a private car park is there any legal action I can use as a stick to try and prod/worry the numpty into coming forward voluntarily ?

You can report it, but the police will probably tell you it is criminal damage and you need to take action through a civil suit.

We had something similar at work with a guy in a delivery van hitting one car, and then when two witnesses tried to stop him he drove into two more manouevring on the way out!

We had CCTV video, the company name on the side of the van, witnesses, etc - but the police weren't particularly interested.

In the end we refused to do business with the supplier until they paid up - they still haven't after two years!

I guess you've tried matching any paint left behind on you car etc.

Perhaps it's time to replace the Chevette ?

Same happened to me in France £500 worth of dent in the side of my new V70 - I was not amused!! Bloody French it must have been malicious!! Police, what's the point in calling them unless you saw the prat what done it! Got my own back though, re-arranged the side of a French owned car with my Land Rover Lightweight in the local supermarket when I got back to England, of course it was an "accident". Revenge is sweet!!

A mate of mine was contracting in Southern Paris when he found a nice dent and scratch down the side of his then new Mitsi 3000GT. WHen he complained to the manager of the hotel he was parked in, the hotel dismissed the incident saying he couldnt proove it was done there. as they were talking in the carpark, a delivery lorry came around the corner, and prompt;ly reversed into the assitant manager's car that was parked in the same place my mates was a few days earlier.

The end result I believe was a refule to pay for the damage, and a refusal to pay his hotel bill on the part of my mate. (I think he even left his dirty washing in the room, packed his bag, and jst walked out!)

Just had to deal with this when someone decided they didn't have to pay for damage to my car because it was on "private property". WRONG! if the general public have access to the area then you are liable for any damage caused (this also includes company car parks as you are a member of the general public) Downside is the police won't get involved. Got my car repaired had hire car and have been compensated for inconvenience. Serves the knob head right for thinking he knew the law, sorry chum but mummy happens to be a barrister.

What about if there is a nice sign saying that the cars are parked at the owner's risk etc...?

Makes no difference - all this means is that the company can't be sued for the damage if someone drives into your motor and fecks off UNLESS the damage is caused by the negligence of the company (unlikely). Whomever it was that caused the damage in this case is liable under the Road Traffic Acts AS LONG AS the public has access to the car park.

This happened to my brother 4 or 5 years back. He had a Mini at the time and was parked in a Pay & Display.

He got back to the car to find his off-side front wing all creased up nicely. There was a note on the screen from a witness, saying what the car was and its reg, but no phone number, so he had no proof.

Seems it was some old duffer who didn't even notice (or if he did couldn't be bothered to do anything about it). My bro still knows the reggie off by heart but hasn't seen the car yet

I saw some spanner do the same in a car park in Redhill the other week - just swung backwards out of a space ripping his bumper and the other car's bumper off. He didn't stop when he hit though, just carried on.

I had a word with him - think he would have left a note anyway, but I was wearing my bike jacket and looking mean at the time so he was left with no alternative

There's just no call for it. If you can't drive, get the bus...

Public access and the Road Traffic Act has nothing to do with it - if somebody reversed into your car on your private driveway they would still be liable for the damage, in the same way as if they reversed into your wall.

You deliberately damaged someone's car in a supermarket car park? Wow, you must be proud.

So, you had someone drive into you in france, and you felt gutted.
You drive into someone elses vehicle purely because they are french, and it gives you pleasure.
Well done, hope you feel better.

Do just employee's of one company use the carpark in question? This happened to a co-worker of mine a few years back, he decided to send an email out to the buildings email alias. I didn't think it would work either, it read something to the tune of... Any information will be treated in confidence.

Someone came forward who had seen it, but because the held such an insignificant position within the company didn't want to tell tales on the manager who had done it.

A quiet word with the manager, and all was resolved. Although he never did tell me who it was.

This is exactly what I'd like to achieve. I'll let you know if I have any success.
