Amongst other cars ranging from a mx5 to a 328i (yes i know) i have been looking at these as they seem cheap and reliable. Are the 2.0 gt models any good/fun!??

not bad. I really enjoyed mine. Get a GT4 if you can aford it and steer well clear of th 1.8 ST.
Decent examples are becoming few and far between now. Good solid engine, although you really have to wind it up to get much out of it (at least in GT form). Handles well given how heavy it is. Also fairly easy to work on - although you wont find a haynes manual for a generation 6! A lot of mechanical parts used in the celica (brakes, engine, etc) are common to other vehicles which makes life a little easier.
If you want low mileage and/or air con you'll need to get your self a Japanese import.
If you can find a decent example for sensible money their not a bad buy, easy to live with and can be entertaining to drive.

Lots of the GTs are imports and they come with 2 engines, 140 and 170bhp, the imports are fairly easy to spot but the differences between the 170 and the 140 are more subtle, easiest way is to get the codes off the vin plate and look here http://www.celica-club.co.uk/wiki/index.php/Gen_6_...

UK GTs are all 170, and STs are 114bhp!

I struggled to find a decent 170, so bought a GTV instead smile

ETA Theres also an import with a 200bhp BEAMS engine but these are pretty rare.
