The jist of the story is....3 years ago I left my long term partner, and thankfully my best mate of 24 years, and her hubby, put me and my 4 year old son up for six months.

During this time, I had very little money (one job, no maintenance payments, half a mortgage, etc) and therefore I was unable to give her anything for staying there. I did clean the house, buy and cook meals but over all felt like crap for not being able to contribute.

I finally got my own place to rent, and money got a tad easier as I got another job, started to receive maintenance and finally got my half of the house (ex partner bought me out). 16 months on and it was time to look for my own pad.....but I made the mistake of telling my landlord, who promptly gave me a months notice.

So once again we were homeless....and once again my best friend put us up for 8 wks. This time I could at least pay my way, and also wanted to give them a 'thank you' gift for helping me so much.

I decided to give them some cash for a nice meal (can't remember the amount tbh) plus I stuck a few hundred in a piggy bank in their daughters room, and said nothing.

10 months on, and I go on Facebook today only to see that she has found the piggy.

She knows it must have been me who left the money and is now insisting I take it back straight away, which of course I have refused. But if you knew Mrs F, you would also know this is not going to be an easy task to continue.

Why the hell can't best mates just accept gifts!

(Opps just noticed the title mistake....see what she's got me like already hehe )

Some people are like that, money makes people feel awkward.

I know its not what you asked, but did you have a tenancy agreement?
Legally he should have given you 2 months..

Money is a rubbish gift. Its better to buy them something thoughtful.

Well, you can find other ways of paying them back, buy the children (or them) a decent pressie or two. They may feel slightly insulted about you giving them cash that way, they may well have been quite happy to put you up simply because you are a friend.

I can understand what they are saying, I wouldn't want someone we'd put up to pay us some cash either.....

Well they probably don't need money then. Gift vouchers for a nice meal? An "experience" of some kind?

Already did the meal thing, and due to their work commitments they have very little free time.

Penny you sound like a nice girl and a good friend.

Your mate obviously sees this and thus wants no compensation for putting you up for a while.

Sounds like a friend for life there.

Take the money back and open a savings account, perhaps NS&I, or buy premium bonds, in the daughter's name.
Keep till daughter is 18, then hand over.

I am also confused. If a friend came to stay with me, I would want nothing. However if the situation was reversed I'd want to give them something.
A momento, never mind how small, is far better than the "filthy lucre".
It's the thought that counts. IMO.
