Hi all,

I have a skoda fabia vrs and after reading many articles i found a company that for £7000 will take it up to 270 bhp and 450 lb/ft torque, they do this by new exhaust, turbo, clutch, flywheel, suspension and a few other tweeks.

as a lot of the parts that do wear down with mileage are being replaced with new sports parts then mileage of the car isn't a massive concern as long as the body is in nick (well that is my train of thought anyway, whether it be wrong or right).

in total it would be do-able for about £13000 which leads to my question:

do you fellow ph'ers think spending £13000 buying and modding a car that would be a true wolf in sheeps clothing is better than spending that cash on a second hand sports car which every one knows what to expect when they see it.

Just as a note im not thinking of doing either of these things as i dont have all that spare cash lol and i can see both arguements but just wondered what you all thought

£7k sounds a lot to only get to 270bhp?

I spent far more than that modding my car, then had to take it all off again and sell the bits at a massive loss. Would I do it again?
Of course! No-one expects a Ford S-Max to have 365bhp/525Nm. sonar

Having spent similar amounts over a number of years tuning what could also be described as a sleeper hatchback, I ask myself the question; Would I do it again?

No, I'd spend that budget on a better car to begin with.

ye i would agree with you all

this started with an arguement between a friend who also has a fabia vrs and is in love with VAG cars

considering i got 45bhp and 80lb/ft for £295 it seems very expensive to pay an extra £6705 for an extra 90bhp and 150lb/ft lol

That seems like a shed load of money for not much really.

Plenty of better cheaper Q cars out there IMO and for a lot less money or a lot more performance for the same money.

The main issue with throwing cash into modifyintg a car is that it is money you will never get bakc. Your 13k fabia would in reality not be worth as much as a standard car to 99% of buyers. The market for such a car would be very small and insuring it would be interesting.

It would however be fun to do and although 270bhp isn't mega power by todays standards i'd imagine it would have enough torque to pull your house down.

If it was my money though I'd spend it on a fast car to start with.

Do you think Skoda intednded the chassis to cope with 270bhp?

This. That's £7000 you will never see again. Buy a better car (*) with that budget and you will have a faster, more desirable car, that shouldn't depreciate to much as the previous owners would have taken most of that hit to their wallet.

  • Alternatively, a keep the Skoda, and spend the £5-7k on a weekend toy?

£7k modding a Fabia VRs and it's still a diesel? I'd want my money back.

I wouldn't spend £7000 on a Fabia to get 270BHP. You can buy an LCR and spend £300 to get 270BHP. And it's much prettier.

The killer is insurance. As an example, I used to insure a 405hp Corvette C5 Z06 for £400 in stock form but pay more than that for my modified Mustang on 4000 miles. Better to buy a standard car with that power as standard.

well the general theme seems to be buy a sports car with the money, which doesnt surprise me at all tbh.

im not doing either at the moment but im sure my mate would be interested to see this.

his arguement is : "imagine the looks on bmw drivers faces when a little skoda hatchback flies past them"

i imagine it would be fun having all that torque on tap but i can think of better ways to have fun with 7k

Only the young seem to attach weight to this argument - it's only valid if the snotter didn't cost as much as the car it just overtook and still look like a turd. If a Reliant Robin overtook me at 150mph, I would ponder what he had spent to make such a crap car that fast. I wouldn't feel humiliated or stupid or inferior because my car would still look way better.

The reality is also that the BMW driver was that stupid, hewould probably race your friend to 10/10ths until one or both was killed in a tragic RTA.

ye thats true read a thread on overtaking saying a similar thing that people dont generally care what they get outrun by.

i just tell him if you want to 7k on your car then its his perogative to do so, each to his own. the world would be very boring if every one had the same ideas anyway

If that's the reasoning though you could get a much, much better sleeper for 13 grand.

Modding hatchbacks quickly loses its appeal tbh.. i should know i've done a few wink

Get a proper car, even it its not a fire-breather - a good handling sports car even a few yrs old with relatively low power when driven well should show a clean pair of heels to any fwd hatch over a good driving road.

Something like this http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1744709.htm ok, that one's sold but you get the idea - 8k and 5k left over to insure/run it. Has to make more sense surely?

Go for something that has stopped depreciating (cerb, elise, caterham etc) and you'll benefit financially as well. N.b. early 911's are actually APPRECIATING in value.. that's never going to happen to a skoda.

Also, there is an added benefit in the badge kudos, if that's your thing (I drive a diesel skoda vs. "its an '86 carrera").

Ask youself the question: what would Steve McQueen choose?

cool
