I have just bought a new car (well 6 months old!) and the V5 has been sent off to the DVLA....I've tried phonong the DVLA to see what's happening but they are not answering!.....I have invoices and receipts but the V5 hasn't turned up yet.....will this be a problem?

I believe it's still a guillotining offence in some departments....

I once traveeled without any documents in a HSV and yes stopped by the police who only wanted to know what car was. Mate in back seat with a good command of Fronglais spent 30 mins arguing we are members of EEC and in Uk do not have to carry V5 so therefore not obliged to in France. I though we would end up in clink but amazing what a good talker can do.

I shouldn't worry to much about it. I got stopped with no documents three weeks back and explained I'd gone out in a hurry and they were in the house here. They looked at my passport, checked it on the in-car scanner, and let me go on my way. They only get tough if you are fooling around.

I agree it is only a problem if you get stopped for speeding. I got stopped in Belgium for speeding less than 2 weeks after registering my car in 2008 and the lovely Belgian Nazis charged me an extra €50 for not being able to present my documents banghead
I argued it was the DVLA's fault and they flat batted "well get the money back from the DVLA then!"
Insurance documents and other requirements i.e. hi-vis jackets in the car for each person in the car plus bulb kit, warning triangle etc. are only likely to be an issue if you get stopped in the first place.

So the solution is "DON'T SPEED" smile

Had a similar problem with the DVLA before the trip last year.
Changed the plate on the car I was using 6 weeks before the off and after 4 weeks still no V5.
Visit to local DVLA office resulted in issuing of a "certificate of ownership" which is hand written at the office after management approval and they charge £2.00.
I got quite animated before they agreed to do this, even though the lack of a V5 was entirely due to their failure to hit service delivery aims.
I put in a formal complaint after the event and got £20 for my trouble, which went some way to compensate me for the time and effort of going to their office.
So, I recommend you get down to your local DVLA office, armed with relevant dates and pay the £2.00. Its better than losing the car!

My mate was stopped on his bike by Tertre Rouge on mad Friday, and was let off after explaining his paperwork was back at the campsite (which it was!).

Don't be a prat and you'll be fine.

I've realised I've lost the paper counterpart to my driving licence, but I have a good colour photocopy that I made a few years back - hopefully won't need it.

I changed the address on my V5 about 3 weeks ago. Still no V5 here.

If its not here in the morning then I am off to their office to get the temporary V5 thanks to them. Pain in the ass.

If you've just bought the car, you'd have the little green slip (V5C I think?) won't you? Not sure what the froggies will make of that though, but I know plod in the UK have been fine with that and me in the past (different circumstances, mind)...

yes

I know they can try and go for a bonus score by checking your documents too after pulling you over for speeding, but I think spot-checks are pretty rare. I'd obviously take it if you can (or a photocopy/fax etc.) but I wouldn't lose sleep over it otherwise. If you're going down the autoroute there's nothing worth attacking at any speed anyway, it's just a question of how long your boredom threshold can stand 129.9 kph.

Famous last words but if you drive within the limits (or within 10km anyway) they wont stop you as there'll be enough morons belting there and back to make it worth their waiting with their speed guns. Why stop someone for 130 km/hr on a motorway when a minute later some knobhead will go past at 175km/hr and they can collect 750 euros

Seems to have been the case here at Le Mans even a week back. Three people in serious doodoo having been caught at 187kph in a 90 limit for example. I guess they thought that the week before the 24 Hour race they'd be safe but apparently not. To paraphrase: be careful out there!

Last year one of our party broke dpown and had his car recovered to a Vauxhall dealer somewhere in France the garage refused to do anything on the car till he could produce the V5 to prove it was his car. In the end he had to get a mate to call a locksmith to brake into his house to get the V5 and then fax it to the garage so they would repair it.

Have you got the green slip (it's the small tear off section) as this counts as the logbook for new owners whilst main part is having names changed? it's section 10 i think?
