Hernia Repair - How Long To Wait?
Discussion
Hi,
I’ve had a inguinal hernia repair and I’m wondering how long I should wait before I can get back on my bike again. Any ideas? The doctor didn’t really seem sure, it would just be road riding on my Cannondale to work and back, about 6 miles each way, nothing severe.
I’m 25, fit and healthy, and the doctor has said I’m healing well. I can’t feel it most of the time now and the last couple of days I’ve been feeling fine. It’s been two and a half weeks since the operation. Would anyone else with a hernia repair care to comment? I’m thinking I leave it another week, would that be ok?
Thanks,
Dan

Ingroinal (sp?) hernias suck. Big time.
I'd give it 4-6 weeks, maybe more. If you feel any pulling, strain etc etc lay off the physical stuff for another week.
*I am in no way, shape or form medically trained, the advice given above may well be utter, utter tosh.
Quick question, did you feel it "go"?
I did, it was one of the strangest experiences of my life. As though my guts were all falling out through a hole in my abdominal wall. Which they were.

i have had two hernias.
First time I left it a month it was fine, then I got the other one (as most men do) on the other side of my groin, I was back to work in 3 days, and back riding in 2 weeks, back at the gym doing as heavy lifts as I'd ever done in 5 weeks. Copius amounts of sex have but the muscles in the area and its all good now

Well, the doctor wrote it as inguinal hernia, as here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inguinal_hernia
Thanks for the advice. Pretty much what I thought. This Tuesday it'll be 3 weeks so I'll give it a further week. I'm feeling pretty much completely better asI've been doing a lot of walking and light exercise.
When it went I just felt a lot of pain around the muscle. It didn't bulge until about a couple of weeks later and yeah, it feels like your guts are coming out!!

My hernia buddy speaks the truth First time I left it a month it was fine, then I got the other one (as most men do) on the other side of my groin, I was back to work in 3 days, and back riding in 2 weeks, back at the gym doing as heavy lifts as I'd ever done in 5 weeks. Same here, two ops first one open single side, following one two years later keyhole both sides.
Open - needs a hell of a long time to recover properly, at least 2-3 months for me but everyone is different
Keyhole - fine after 3 weeks or so. Still feels wierd but then you are not supposed to have mesh inserted in that area by design!
Mine was open, and as you can probably guess from my post above took a little while to sort itself out.
When it went was quite possible the strangest thing I have ever experienced.
I was sat with a guitar on my lap, strumming away. All of a sudden and completely without warning, the muscular wall parted and whatever organs wanted to shift, shifted.
Large bulge (I say large, I never compared my bulge with anybody elses) protruding from just above my Schlong and over to my right a bit. No pain, just a mild discomfort and the worst mental anguish I had ever experienced upto that point in my life.
Utterly terrifying for a 13 year old in the house on his own
