Learning to spraypaint

I'm handy with rattlecans and can do a repair that (to my eyes, anyway) blends perfectly to the original paintwork. But now my old motor has developed so many scratches and rust bubbles that pretty much every panel needs a respray.
The cost of a full spray-job exceeds the value of the car, so I'm thinking of investing the same cash into tools and learning to do the job myself (with ample practice on spare panels, of course.)
Is this doable? Anyone done this before, or can point me towards a decent Car Painting forum where I can get some proper in-depth knowledge?
