Beta testing?
Hi everyone, first thing I hope I'm not breaking any posting rules by asking for a bit of help in what is essentially something I get paid to do but...
I've spent the last few months working on a HTTP proxy server that provides content adaptation specifically for users who are on bandwidth contrained links. e.g. dialup users on 56/33K modem links but more speciffically users that access the web via satellite.
A bit of background - the proxy is configured to always return text/html in gzipped format to HTTP 1.1 compliant browsers - you'd be utterly astounded at how many web servers don't routinely apply this optimisation (PH for one).
Secondly the proxy performs image transcoding, typically reducing the file size of images by upto 80% but still leaving a 'recognizable' picture at the end of the day (it sucks for looking at porn btw
).
It also performs transcoding of downloaded audio files to a lower sampling rate.
What I could really do with is about a dozen users who'd be willing to spend a bit of time browsing the internet using this proxy server.
All I ask is for a little feedback on how you found the experience, especially if you thought setting up the your browser was easy or difficult to achieve. And doubly if you find any web site that break when viewed through the proxy.
My logs will allow me to analyse how well the server is working nad there is also a little traffi monitor widget that will show you how much your interent traffic is being compressed.
You can see the introduction/instruction/self-destruction pages here
http://mobileinternet-4.dsl1.easynet.co.uk
Please feel free to take a look, but before you all jump on the band wagon the server is currently locked down to prevent unauthorised access - you can still view the help pages though.
Anyone willing to give this a go, even if its just for a few hours on an evening please email me through my profile. I'll need to know if you are a cable/dsl/lan user with a static IP address or if you are a dialup user who gets a different IP Address each time you connect.
Finally, this work has been performed as an extension to the Apache Web Server Proxy Module and as such I have permission from my employer to release the work back into the Apache Foundation as open source - so your chance to contribute.
many thanks

Fixed Now

ok, sorry I'm obviously not making myself clear here.
Coming soon is a picture of the traffic monitor.
Now, I disabled my computer's LAN connection then dialed up from my Easynet account. My IP was 212.135.51.114.
This screen shows the traffic saving of me clicking through a few PH pages in the forums - umm 62 of them.
Speciffically I clicked through every page of my beloved society thread that I can't seem to find any time to go and read and contribute to, yep all seven pages of them. Then I browsed around a few other pages and read a few more posts.
I'm on a dialup connection, so I'm being charged by the minute, some of you are being charged by the bit/byte/megabit/megabyte whatever.
Look at the reduction in traffic levels this server is producing. Even on a dialup link pages arrive upto 80% faster (admitedly after a delay) because I'm sending YOU 80% less traffic.
For those of you that are charged by the bit I've just knocked your bill down by 80
%.
ok, read down the first column.
Count 62 web pages - well web requests,
Without EA, this is the amount of traffc I received on your behalf (nope my behalf - because at the moment I'm showing you) - oh yeah - 620 KiloBytes
Next. With EA ummm 148 KiloBytes.
Now read the columns do the sums tell your IT guys, tell your friends, give them my email address, give them the web page.
Ex
btw
I forgot to mention - using the highlest level of content adaptation the picture you saw above looks like the picture you see below when its run through the proroxy.
Finally the PH home page (but 80% cheaper) looks like this:
