Went to the back door this morning to see our cat sprawled on the patio. Cold and stiff. Only three and a half. No signs of damage, no vomit.
The vet has confirmed it was almost certainly a heart attack.
He was a very loving cat. Sue has been in tears on and off all morning and I've been pretty close.

Sounds like it was instantaneous - I know that's no consolation to you but at least he didn't suffer.
Get another cat - don't treat it as a replacement but more like a tribute to Oscar, that he's left a hole in your life which while not 'replaceable' had to filled by another of his species. We refer to one of our current family as 'legacy cat' cos she's so like our beloved Hagar, whose hole she filled in our lives.

So he's truly Foxtrot Oscared? Poor fella. Not much consolation but it sounds like it was quick. Once found one of ours in the front garden after he'd been run over
I disagree with the advice to get another, at least right away. Give it a while, probably until you've gone through the phase of imagining you've seen/heard him around the place.

I am sorry to hear that, especially when he was so young. But you know that you gave him a happy life whilst he was with you, and he went without suffering.
I think give yourself a bit of time to grieve, then give consideration to getting a rescue, so that you can give another cat a happy home and life.

Sorry to hear that OP, know what it feels like to lose a pet.
Yet you go and make a comment like that?? Unbelievable.
