If the sender doesn't put enough (or as in this case, any) postage on the envelope, you get a notice (if you're not in) that the item could not be delivered for that reason...

The dilemma I have with this is that first I have to go and collect this item from the sorting office. Then, having to pay for something that you may not have been expecting ergo have no idea what it is.

I've had this happen three times in as many weeks - average cost is £1.10. Two of these items have been a complete waste of my time and money and now I'm thinking what to do with this one. Ignore it, or pass by the S.O. and have a butcher's at what it is and decide whether to accept it or reject it. I get the feeling some senders are posting stuff knowing that it will be paid for at the other end.

Feeky chuckers.

Unless you're expecting something, ignore it. If it is important the sender will follow it up.

Usually the PO will let you have a look at/feel of it and then decide if you want it. Hell my local will even steam it open for you smile

Did you upset someone? hehe
Seems like a childish thing to do...

So what happens to these packages in the end, if you don't accept them and there's no return address?

If there is a return address; would reply (twice) reminding them that no stamp was affixed. With no stamp, obviously.

That's what I'd do if they don't let you look at it in the sorting office prior to making the unwanted postage payment. Never know, could be something important.

I had to go and pick one of these up for an ex boss of mine, that hadn't had a stamp put on it.
The woman behind the counter picked out a letter, and said that I might not want it. I asked why not?
It was addressed something like:
To the lazy fat bd who ignores his kids and parental responsibility
In the beautiful house that I slaved to decorate etc etc

It gave the people behind me in the queue a good giggle hehe

Go to the sorting office, and ask to see what it is. If it is someone messing you about, write a letter back to them, and post it back to them in a padded envelope full of something heavy. Stick it in a post box, without a stamp on it.

It has to fit in a post box, or the person behind the counter will point out that it doesn't have a stamp on it.

Instead.... some finely sliced tuna sellotaped to a piece of paper should do it....

If it's anything to do with the establishment, I'd have to 'sign it' after my morning delivery.
