I have just taken a role up in Doncaster and will be moving up shortly...

I've looked in and around the Wakefield area (Stanley, Robin Hood, Lofthouse...) and am keen to know if there are any folks here who could throw in a recomendations from your experience.

Maximum commute = 45 mins (I muiss rush hour traffic
Preferred loc = west of Doncaster (am open to suggestion though)

Many thanks all

im about 8-10 miles south, technically in Notts but nearest town East is in Lincs, West in Notts, North in Sth Yorks smile ...but there are loads of nice villages all around here

depends really what you want I guess....if you have a family need good schools, or want to be in a town with nightlife etc

what facilities do you need, what sort of property do you want, are you renting or buying etc.....all will sway your decision I guess

I've always been based in London so not sure if my opinion is valid . .
I worked a lot in Sth Yorks and always found East Yorks much nicer than going West.
Particularly around Howden, Eastrington, Cave, etc.

Thanks Gibson70...

I'm in a lucky situation in that I have little that I really need in terms of schools and so on but these are my main criteria:

Good pub(s)
Local amateur rugby club

No kids... yet.

I know they are some really nice areas all around S & W Yorkshire as well as north Northamptonshire and input is really appreciated smile

+1 I live there (well near anyway).

45 Minutes driving distance is a big area. Whereabouts are you working in Doncaster. Depending on this could affect where you live as it can take up to 30 minutes to get in to the town from some directions.

Agree!

The only place thats even remotely worth looking at is Bessecarr. It really is a god awful place, loads of gypsies and people that still think its the 50s where they treat people like dirt!

Terrible place!

Commute in less than 45 minutes if you go the right way.

West Sheffield, right on the doorstep of the Peak District, with some great roads.

It will take 45 minutes to get across Sheffield to the M1/ M18 from SW Sheffield, did it for 5 years.

Having spent many years in Doncaster (including Bessacarr for 10 years) I would only recommend the Bawtry road end. I have heard it has gone downhill in Bessacarr as with many large estates. Bawtry road is a bugger in the morning though. Nicest place in Doncaster to live imo is warning tongue lane and that vicinity. Expensive but cheaper than the posh parts of Sheffield.

If you search on Rightmove all the expensive houses are Bawtry Rd / Cantley Lane so that tells you where the best area is really.

Sprotbrough is OK near the A1.

Doncaster is not as bad as people make out. Sheffield City centre is pretty much a no go zone and the houses are much more expensive.

I'm guessing somewhere between Gainsborough and Retford.

Thinking about it Retford is not a bad shout for the OP either.

Bawtry is very nice, I could quite happily live there, or in one of the villages around it ....

Im in a village called North Wheatley 1/2 way between Retford and Gainsborough on the A620 ...10 mins from the A1 and Retford station...you get a Notts address, a Doncaster postcode, and a Lincs (Gainsborough) phone number ....thanks to the changing borders over the years LOL wink

basically just stay out of the City/big towns and some places are very nice, with very reasonable property prices compared to the South

Nope - Chesterfield Road / Woodseats / Ecclesall Rd / Abbeydale Rd / Brocco Bank always horrendous at all times - when the bus lane is 'closed' everyone parks in them (as they are allowed) so it's always nose to tail. Hateful journey - it was the main reason I moved. I could appreciate that from 7-9.30 am it was always asthmatic snails pace but it's snails pace outside rush hour too.

There's a repo I have my eye on at North Wheatley - what's the area like?

Just down the road from me. If the OP likes villages I also recomend Misson. Near Bawtry for night life, 2 pubs, one of which has just been refurbed into a proper local.
