Sony A200 18-70 lens broke, best solution
Discussion
Recently got my camera out for a holiday and there was a loud wirring coming from the lens that sounded like a cog wasn't meshing properly. I'm fairly sure it hasn't been dropped so not sure what has happend. The camera still takes a picture just wirring as the autofocus adjusts the lens and it doesn't happen when I change to my zoom.
Jessops said they could send it back to an approved Sony but it would cost £25(out of gurantee)for them to look at it and then the repair might not be economical. A replacement lens would be about £100 if they could find one as Sony has now replaced it with something like a 18-50mm lens.
Has anyone any suggestions to a decent repairer or replacement lens?

It's not worth paying to have it repaired - it has stripped the AF gear, this can happen on a few cheap lenses.
Your cheapest option would be to buy another 18-70, but I would use this opportunity to get something better, the 18-55 new kit lens is said to be a lot better, but you will lose a little range.
Other options are Tamron 17-50, CZ 16-80 or Sony 16-105 etc, but you are looking at £300 and upwards for any of these. There are a few Minolta lens options, but none will be very wide at the short end.

you could try getting an old minolta af 28-85 f3.5-4.5 or similar. you could probably pick one up for less than £30 and the image quality (and build) is significantly better than the 18-70 kit lens.
i have one of these as well as the 70-210 beercan and the kit lens and the 28-85 is my everyday walkaround- i wouldnt go back to using the kit lens now. the only problem is that you lose a bit at the wide end (but it zooms further) and it can search a bit in low light, but at the price you cant complain.

My Sony Alpha 300 is very happy with the Sony 18-250. Does everything I need, (apart from macro), and I haven't used the 18-55 in ages.
I wanted one of those instead of the tamron but couldn't find one cheap enough. I googled quite a lot and it seemed to indicate the Sony 18-200 or 18-250 is a tamron in a nice frock so I opted for the tamron and I'm very happy. Could be wrong but it appeared on quite a few net results.Gassing Station | Photography & Video | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
