Surely by putting a valve in the heater pipe where it comes out of the inlet manifold you are not only shutting off the heater but also water coming out of the cylinder head into the inlet manifold. The heater circuit has a by-pass (H piece) precisely to prevent this happening when the heater is turned off. The new valve you have fitted should, in my opinion, be fitted after the heater by-pass. This would allow the water coming from the inlet manifold to circulate unhindered.
