Hi Guys,

My Z4 3.0 2004 started making a ticking noise today - performance is fine and no warning lights but any idea what it could be? Cheers

Where's the noise coming from?

Have you checked the oil level?

If its valvetrain do some searching on the Z4 forum for 'lifters' and therein you may have the answer...

it's coming from the top of the engine block. Yes got almost full oil - will take it into a dealer I think to be sure.

Does it sound a bit like this:

If so, it's hydraulic lifters.

If it's only ticking on tickover but getting quieter as revs rise it may be No5 plug working loose (but check No's 4 & 6) if not I would suggest fresh oil and an Italian tune up.

Ragging a car making a mechanical ticking noise, genius advice there!

Having owned an 328i M52 (inlet only Vanos) that made a ticking noise on tickover that was cured by tightening up No5 plug and a 525i M50 with a lazy tappet that was also cured with fresh oil and 1.2 lepton pass down the A1M I think I know what I'm talking about.

To quote the owners manual for the M50 engined e34 525i page 65

after a lengthy period driving in heavy city traffic or in a slow moving queue, let the engine "breathe deeply" by driving for a few kilometres above 3000rpm. This will disperse any soot deposits in the combustion chambers.

The ticking on the 328 is the small valve under the inlet isnt it? read on the net somewhere.

ragging the car seems a bit kill or cure for my tastes biglaugh

The ticking in my 328 was a ever so slightly loose plug.

If you think an Italian tune up is extreme then the prefered method for tuning a two stroke back in the seventies would make you faint!

The riders would go on track and work the bikes hard enough so the piston would just start to nip up. The engine would be stripped and the high spot where the piston had rubbed in the bore would be polished out, this would be done a couple of times until the tuner was happy or ran out of braveness. The engines had some very strange clearances when cold but once hot they were fine.

A 2-stroke race bike is a bit different to a daily drive though...

Does the ticking noise go away when you engage the clutch at idle? It could be just the clutch plate rattling, very common.

As a daily drive a race tuned two stroke is less practical than a space hopper. biggrin
