Could a historian comment upon the plausiblity of this?
Discussion
Ok.
Here's a pic from my local:

First of all: Obviously the particular document on display at the pub doesn't actually date from the eighteenth century.
But myself and a friend have a disagreement as to the general authenticity of it (as a facsimilie, or whatever). He thinks that it's plausible. I don't think that it is - something doesn't ring true about it.
But he's a mere analyst @ MI6 and I'm a mere interest rates trader. Neither of us have any genuine expertise that would allow us to judge this correctly (I admit my ignorance, he blusters, which I believe is standard in the glorified civil service).
But pistonheads will definitely have someone who knows.
That someone... please help? Please?

But the question is: "is the content realistic?"
Not "is this bona fida or is it some git with MS Paint?"
ETA Etymologically speaking, it seems valid - the closest word used in date to the given auction date is the 'cudbear' that, apparently, is a dye from around 1760.

Don't see why not. What's the location?
The location is the Pilot Inn on the North Greenwich Peninsula if anyone really wishes to visit it* but the actual historical document is obviously not... historical... I want to know if there was an orginial real document or something like it.
*I would be happy to have many pints with many pistonheaders at this pub; please reply to this thread if you wish to have a pint with me (first one will be on me
) and we'll sort that out - a few pistonheaders know me and know I'm not a child molsester or axe murderer

Wreck sale 1796 in Google is now showing the 5th ranking as this thread, which is always amusing.
I found this link as part of the newspaper archives (http://www.origins.org.uk/genuki/NFK/norfolk/newspapers/nfkchron/1780/12.shtml#dec09) which refers to the sale of wreck of a particular ship, which seems infinitely more common than a collective sale. This might be something to do with the law, which, perhaps unsurprisingly from a maritime island, is quite specific as to the status of flotsam, jetsame, lingan, and wreck in general.
What is it specifically that's causing you to be suspicious?
