Rave jacket - front of car or in the boot?

Hi,

Quick question. Of the following:

Flourescent jacket
Warning triangle
Spare bulbs
Documents (V5, MOT and insurance certificate)

(...I think that's all?)

Does anything need to be accesible from the front seat or can it all be shovelled into the boot?

I believe it is:

Hi-vi in the front/accessible from the front seats.
Warning triangle in the boot, but not buried.
Bulbs and Documents - wherever you like, preferably in the car and in the right country though.

Hi Viz has to be accessible from within the car, i.e. not in the boot.

I've foudn the pockets in the back of the front seats work fine for this. You dont need a Uk atlas anyway..!

There must be a hi-viz for every occupant also... not just the driver.

You're right, you must be able to get them without getting out the car.

Oh, by the way, if anyone in the know happens to be reading this, can I confirm it's about 20 Euros each way in tolls if you follow the main autoroutes? Can't remember from last time.

According to the AA it is only compulsory to have one hi viz jacket. Checked with Seafrance and they say one per passenger. Which one is correct?

With regards to tolls, I am expecting 24 euro each way. The Michelin route planner calculates it for you, ideal!

It is one per passenger. What I have never been able to get straight is if they ALL have to be in the car with you or just the drivers.

I was confused by this too. The AA don't mention bulbs being compulsory either though. I've got a jacket for each passenger just in case.

(White gloves and whistles are recommended but optional )

in 08 when a mates ( and PH'er) car went up in flames on the way to Le mans we never gave it a thought to put on a high viz, triangle or anything. was at the side of the road for a hour until we got everything running ( only a small fire) and had no issues with using all this gear.

Not saying we won't in the future

True. I can't say I have intention of incurring a chat with the gendarmes (where they might check for jackets etc.) for that matter either, but it just seemed easier to be safe than sorry in case they're feeling trigger happy with the fines.

The RAVE JACKET needs to be accessible so it's worn before you exit the car in case of a breakdown or accident.

Aldi have a euro motoring pack on offer at the moment, 15 quid gets you 2 jackets, a triangle, bulbs, torch, GB sticker and headlight sections I think.

1) The legal requirement is one for each person getting out of the vehicle, to be put on before getting out.
2) They are only really relevant to motorways (you don't need to put one on to get out the car before popping in to the boulangerie to buy your french stick) - though the law still applies about having one to hand.
3) If you break down on the motorway you shouldn't all be getting out anyway, just one person to make the breakdown call.
4) If you are in a serious crash/the car is on fire/etc screw the hi-viz and get out - I can't imagine you will be done for not wearing your vest as the copper pats the flames out on your trousers.

So that's one in my book.

Oh and as for the Seafrance advice, anyone like to bet they they tell you this on the boat too and...sell really expensive hi-viz jackets in the ferry shop?
