Does a self adjusting clutch, mean that the biting point is always in the same place, regardless of clutch wear ?

How do you tell when the clutch is getting to the end of its life, if it isnt slipping yet ?

I've got a '97 saab 900, and the biting point seems to be pretty high, ( ie I only need to depress the clutch 1/5 before I can change gear ), is this a sign of the clutch being on its way out ?
It not slipping or anything like that..

Usually when you lift the clutch in gear, and the car doesn't move. Or you can't get the car in to gear.

From experience :

A self adjusting clutch will only adjust so far..near the end of its life the biting point will get higher and higher.

A worn out clutch will usually manifest itself in a couple of ways : 1st is that the clutch will get "juddery" when hot, this normally happens when the friction materiel is almost gone and the clutch is making metal to metal contact.

2. Clutches normally first start slipping in a high gear under torque, ie, 5th gear on hill on a motorway and foot flat to the floor. One easy test is to put it into 4th gear with the handbrake up, give it 3000rpm and try to raise the clutch. IF the engine stalls, clutch is fine, if not it will smell bad and start slipping.

Having said that, my experience is that on a properly driven car ( ie no clutch slip in traffic, and properly rev matched changes ) clutch wear is almost zero and a "worn" clutch can last a very very long time.

I managed to get back from the South of france with a slipping clutch in a Saab 9000, just had to be very careful with the throttle in any gear above 3rd.

Cheers for that, it was kind of what I thought, but good to have some confirmation.
