Pretty handy with a screwdriver and a spanner - however not really worked on domestic appliances before.

So we have a Bosch Logixx dishwasher, half sized thing. It has worked since we moved in about a year ago.

A month ago, it stops while draining and now wont start its cycle. When you start it up, you hear all the usual whirring and clicking as it did just before it kicked off spraying water etc, now it starts the whirring and clicking and doesn't do anything.

No obvious error lights, and the digital time shows the normal 100 - 120 mins countdown but it stays on around 80 minutes forever.

Can someone advise the basics to check first before I spend £100 on a repairman!

Drain is blocked.

It backs up with water and then stops as a safety mechanism.

I have checked the hose that leads out the back, and into the cluster of pipes that go straight thrgouh the wall into the outlet drain - the sink uses the same pipes.

Do you mean a drainage blockage at the machine end?

Does it fill with water? If not, the first thing I would have a look at is the solenoid valve that fills it up - easy to find, because the cold water feed screws onto it and the valve itself will be hiding just behind the panel. See if it gets mains to it at the appropriate time - if it does, you could (carefully!) pull the hose off it and see whether it's actually admitting water. If not, I would attempt to discover whether the machine thinks it is already full of water - there'll most likely be an (air) pressure operated switch fitted to the highest point on a translucent water tank type thing.

Either the drain is blocked or the pump could be faulty.

Brushes may need renewing on the motor

Check the pump isn't clogged. Possibly a chunk of veg or something like that jamming the impeller.

We had a Philips Whirlpool that did something similar. We presumed a blockage and on pulling it out from under the worktop it leaked about a cup of water. we couldn't find a blockage but tried it again and it worked fine.

We later discovered a small ice hockey puck sized plastic dish built into the base of the washer which had some sort of float cut off system to prevent flooding.

Also does it have rotating plastic blades that direct the water? If so disconnect these (usually a quarter turn twist lock) and wash out. they can get clogged with pasta n stuff and may be causing an auto cut off as they will be restricting water flow.

Sounds like exactly the same problem I had with my dishwasher about a month ago (Bosch Logixx, full size).

You'll need to remove the left side panel where all the water inlet & pressure chamber are located, together with the flow regulator for the water level. These all get really bunged up with food debris and other gunk over time and stop the switches kicking in to start the cycle. What I did was to carefully remove all of this and give it a thoroughly good clean out in the sink - particularly the float/pressure chamber which was full of debris. Re-assembled and put all back in place, it now works like new. A useful site is www.bosch-eshop.com where you can find various diagrams of the above by doing a search under your model number.

It might seem obvious but, please remember to disconnect the electric before commencement. A friend wink once forgot to do so and nearly ended up with a permanent wave.

Yeah they do clog up with crap. I flushed mine backwards to clear all the pipes out - you would be amazed at what disgusting stuff was found in something used to "clean" dishes! Yuck. The float houses gets clogged up too, not sure about yours but usually the top lifts up and you can clean it. Then get some dishwasher cleaner for good measure and give that a go - costs a couple of quid from Tesco or where ever and put it in on a hot/high strength cycle.
