Ok, so I know that this topic gets touched upon regularly but I've done the search and I can't find any recommendations for insurance companies and/or brokers that provide the most competitive quotes for young drivers.

Here's the situation. My eldest daughter will be 17 in August and she's desperate to learn to drive. I had an 02 Ford Ka offered to me that I just couldn't refuse and it's being delivered tonight. So the plan is to insure it for me and my wife and add my daughter in August. I will be the main driver as I'll use it for my daily commute. The problem is that the quotes are reasonable for me and the wife but speak to the same insurance company about what happens when I add my daughter and the price goes ballistic or they won't insure a 17 year old.

Typically for me and my wife the cost is <£200 rising to ~£1200 when adding my daughter. Yet if I get a quote with my daughter on the policy from day one (by frigging the DOB) the quotes come in at £600-£700.

I don't want to take out a policy now to have to pay cancellation charges in 2 months to change insurer. The only other option is to SORN the car until August and then take out a 12 month policy with my daughter included.

Anyone else had this problem? Got any recommendations (specialist broker etc) or ideas?

Try NFU Mutual, we tend to be alright for young learner on car.

Obviously we receommend that as soon as they have passed their test, you get a policy in their own name.

I would just take out a policy in your own name for two months, its not exactly that much hassel to cancel an insurance policy and take out a new one.

One thing to consider is that you will be fronting on insurance if you are the main user of the car and your daughter is the main driver on the policy as she wont be using the car as much as you.

That's what I've been looking at and it seems if I cancel the policy after 2 months then it'll cost me 40% of the premium but at around £100 that's manageable.

As for fronting my take is that if I was the policy holder and declared main driver, however, in reality my daughter was the principal driver then that is fronting. As a learner there is little option for her to be the main driver and I will be using it daily for my commute so no issue with that point. The only downside is that the Alfa will have to go cry

I contacted my local NFU office and basically, as I wasn't an existing customer, they weren't interested plus they would have defined my daughter as the principal driver immediately even on her provisional licence (with the consequential impact to the premium). But thanks for the suggestion anyway.
