Mexican police say 55 bodies have been recovered from an abandoned mine that appears to have been used as a mass grave by drugs gangs.

Human remains were first discovered in the silver mine near Taxco in Guerrero state at the end of May.

The bodies appeared to have been thrown down a 200m (650ft) ventilation shaft over a period of time, police said.

Earlier reports that 77 bodies had been recovered were mistaken, officials said.

Only six have so far been identified - one was the director of a local prison.

Guerrero state is a focal point for drug-related violence that has claimed more than 22,000 lives in Mexico since 2006.

Police are now checking other mineshafts in the area to see if bodies have also been dumped there.

Morgues overwhelmed

Police and civil defence workers used breathing equipment to descend deep underground to recover the bodies.

Recovering the bodies is proving difficult and dangerous They are taking photos and DNA samples in the hope of identifying the dead.

Some corpses have tattoos associated with the drugs gangs, police said.

Local morgues have been overwhelmed by the number of bodies.

While most of the drug-related violence over the past four years has been concentrated in northern Mexico along the border with the US, other regions have not been immune.

Guerrero, in the south and with a Pacific coastline, has also seen bloody turf wars for control of drug smuggling routes.

Hmm.

A few days to die with busted arms and legs. Not a nice way to check out.

On a pile of others who'd suffered the same fate.

200m is a bit more serious than broken arms or legs. (60 odd stories?)

Hmmm how many dead bodies would it take to make the fall survivable ?

If you drop a mouse down a 200ft hole; provided there is a mossy soft-ish surface it will bouncy get up and scuttle away.

A hedgehog if lucky will behave similarly.

A human would rupture massivly and possibly partially explode.

A horse would splash.

Mexican drug gangs......not sure being dead before being thrown down a shaft is an essential part of the initiation ceremony!

Unless I am mistaken there are some South American countries (say Columbia) where the most common cause of death in males between 18 and 65 is a drug related incident.... Mexico is a mere amateur in comparison..

Indeed.

And what if you'd managed to survive... and then found another 'body' land next to you?

I have massive respect for the Mexican police and drug enforcement divisions in the border areas. They must know that the odds of them making it to pension age are not good. They'd probably have a better life expectancy doing a 30 year tour of Afghanistan.

They are not nice people.

They are taking over the Colombia - USA route from the Colombians.

This route goes past my front door, practically.

Every week or so one of their shipments goes astray, and when it does ANYONE who was involved with the missing drugs is tortured and executed.

Even the Colombians are scared of the Mexicans.
