Picture the scene. Lovely sunny Sunday afternoon, decide to go for a top-down cruise to a nice local pub for some refreshing cider type sustenance, so my brother and I head for my MX5.

Brother:- "You've never let me drive your car."

Me:- "You're welcome to, jump in!"

Brother:- "I can't start it."

Me:- "No, you do the immobiliser fob thing first."

Brother:- "Oh..."

Me:- "What?"

Brother:- "I've snapped the key in the ignition."

So, I'm left with my MX5 obstructing my parents' driveway, steering lock on and binbags covering the windows that I conveniently left down. I managed to extract the remnant of key from the ignition and had it looked at by a locksmith who did his best to fabricate a key. Unfortunately, this key does not work.

I cannot face the prospect of shelling out untold sums to have all the locks replaced on a car that frankly, isn't worth it.

Any ideas...

Get some second hand locks? If you're in Winchester Autolink should be able to sort you out. Have you only got the one key for it then?

Two things in life I won't lend: my wife and my car. Even to my brother.

Ollie's situation is one of those reasons why. Get him to sort it.

Indeed.

Just think what could get snapped off in your wife.

Yeah, only one key (Now in two pieces) and it doesn't look like an original either, eg, no numbers on it.

My brother says it is not his fault as the key is made of cheese like metal, I say don't try turning when its only half way in.

Any idea on a very rough price for replacing both door locks and ignition barrel?

To be fair to him it's not entirely his fault the key's been weakened over time, particularly if the OP hasn't lubed his locks regularly...

But I suspect he doesn't know thathehe

My original key snapped off in the armrest cubby hole! Luckily I had a spare and got two more cut. £9.50 each though!!

Is it a MK1? Mine looks easy enough to hotwire. Give that a go!

could you not superglue the two halves back together and then use that as a template to have a new one cut?
