Best route to Italy?
Discussion
You can either go north from Dunkirk into the worlds largest lamppost museum (some call it Belgium), to Luxembourg, and then southwards a bit which gets you round French tolls.
Or you can head south on the A16 or A26 (can never remember) to Reims, Metz/Nancy, Strasbourg, Basel (CH), through St Gotthard and continue to Como and into Italy that way. You can take a small cross country detour in France to go through Alsace (head for Molsheim) which avoids Strasbourg, and gives the car a bit of a break. You won't lose any time, and there is a fabulously cheap petrol station about 10 miles in on that route. Look for exit 45 on whatever that autoroute is for Molsheim.

Or get the car train from Paris to Nice, and miss out all the French toll roads.
