I suspect that this is new TVR owner paranoia, exacerbated by imminent thousand-odd mile trip to Italy, but over the last few days I've noticed a few spots of oil have appeared under the front of the car (4.5 Chimaera, R reg, about 46k miles). The oil level on the dipstick hasn't dropped dramatically (it's used a few mm over 700+ miles - Mobil 1). Should I be concerned about the minor leakage or do "they all do that"? I've only got a couple of days before we set off to get it checked out so should I get onto the dealer? Don't really want something important to let go half way across France...!
Alex.
(PS - car was serviced by the dealer before I picked it up, about 3-4 weeks ago)

Have a look underneath to identify exactly where it is coming from. Rover V8s can sometimes leak from the sump gasket which isn't going to ruin your day. However it could be more serious which wouldn't be good if you where thrashing it in Italy.

Most car tyre places will let you have a look underneath for free if they aren't busy and you ask nicely. Or drop into your dealer if they are close by.

I wouldn't panic though, just check it out brfore you go.

Mine was leaking from the rocker covers, the mechanic took about 5 secs to work out where it was leaking. £100 to fix and no drips since.

SwanJack, what did he do? Tighten up the rocker cover bolts? Nice £100 ...

Perhaps you should have paid him for the 5 seconds it took to diagnose and then have got the spanners out when you got home

BLOODY HELL!!

Hmmm, Rocker covers, 3 hours to change, but I cleaned the rocker cover and polished the top first! Takes about 10 Minutes! (OK it's a ford but still!) For £100 I would have expected anybody to put gold gaskets in and Gold Bolts too! Oh, don't forget the full valet and tyre change too!!

£100! Thats a cool £95 profit (only if he changed the gaskets that is) Rocker Cover Gaskets retail at £2.50 each! What I would give to be a mechanic!!!

Have you seen the number of pipes and wires and widgets crossing over the rockers on the Rover V8? I thought about cleaning mine up, and gave up when I realised how much would have to come off to get at them ... it's not a Ford X flow you know.

It's not bad news - My Rover V8 dripped enough oil to protect the spine of the chassis from rust.

Hmm. Yes, I assumed this, and walked away happy with the car. Imagine my surprise at home when I found rust under the oil!

I also tripped over an elephant on my way out the dealers...

Sorted today - twas the oil pressure switch. Quick trip down to Fernies and ten minute repair job for a bit less than £100, thankfully (done gratis). And a pleasant blast back home via the A272. All's well, etc.

Errrm, I forgot to mention that this was almost the only good news at the time. Engine leaking oil mate; you're lucky you are.

I was! Must admit, I was darned lucky that only the outriggers had rotted and that the oil drips were nothing significant. Knowing what little I now know about TVRs, my sensible head would probably not make the same purchase decision.

Having said that, it sounds so intoxicating that I might have bought it anyway.

Hope you have got things sorted out satisfactorily and are out with the rest of us enjoying this fantastic TVR weather
