Hello Everyone, I am writing this from the US but I will be moving to the Menwith Hill area, come August.

I'm a Subaru(and other cars) lover, I've owned a 2004 STi w/575 AWHP, but had my son so I sold it to get rid of the payments. I then picked up a very rare(in the US) JDM 1995 STi Type RA for alittle while and sold that. Currently just have the wife's car 2005 Legacy.

When I get there I am looking to pick up a 1994-2000 STi(impreza/wagon/forester) so I am asking for a recomendation on where to go/look for that when the time comes. I've been browsing the ads here and have seen a few nice one's so far

Also any recommendations on where to live that's about 30mins or less from Menwith Hill is also something I'm looking for. I know Leeds is south, so if you recommend there could you be more specific exactly where you mean.

Thanks

also here are my former rides

There is an import place in bradford that has a decent stock list

http://www.wrc-sales.co.uk/bradford/

but I have no idea how good the service/cars are. Also google 'Well Lane Turbo Centre' as they always have a few scoobies for sale

Just bring me a suitcase of the new iPhone's over as thanks ;-)

Isn't Well Lane Turbos reputation on the slide?

WRC Sales always have a good stock list too, but I would definitely consider taking someone with you and looking for a private sale on enthusiast owned cars as there are a lot of abused Imprezas about.

As for living?

How far is Harrogate from Menworth Hill (I forget)

Oh and welcome wavey

Nearest Subaru Main Dealer would be K.T. Green near Otley. They do like carrying the "previous" model Scooby, (they stock Caterham's as well). RedLine Racing at Knaresborough isn't miles away and a few on here recommend it too. Well Done by the way. That area has some great driving roads and where ever you are it should be an interesting drive into work. Harrogate is very nice for the most part but can be pricey. Pateley Bridge is a nice little town not far away along with villages like Greenhow, Dacre And Summerbridge. Although some are on well used roads there are plenty of good driving roads that snake between them. If they are a bit Small. Otley, Ilkley and Skipton and the Villages near them like Addingham are not too far away and it is easy to get to the A59 off which Menwith Hill sits. I always smile going though Blubberhouses. Oh and the A59 Between Blubberhouses and the Bolton Abbey turn off has a resemblance to a Swiss mountain road so be careful until you get to "know" the roads.

Welcome!

RE cars - Imprezas are popular over here, theres loads of specialists/UK based forums and owners groups etc. Theres loads of decent dealers for all types of car up here in Yorkshire and nearby, so I'm sure you'll be able to find what your looking for. Try the pistonheads classifieds, motors.ebay.co.uk and also autotrader.co.uk as a starter.

As for where to live -

Menwith hill area is actually within pretty close reach of plenty of nice places to live - Harrogate, Knaresborough, and most of the Suburbs of North Leeds are all easy commuting distance, so you've a really good choice. As Gemini says, with a bit more info on what your looking for we could help out with some more detailed suggestions.

Nice cars - love the RA! See the occasional one of those over here (we have a lot of JDM cars in the UK for the obvious reason).

Have you ever visited Yorkshire/The UK before?

You'll be pleased to know we have some absolutely superb driving roads round here - in fact a commute to Menwith Hill would be a bloody nice daily hoon compared to most peoples trips!

Welcome to God's own county!

Re cars, as said before there is a good Subaru dealer, K T Green, located about 8 miles south of Menwith. Sells new but also some limited edition UK models (I drive past it every day and never see JDM models, I guess Subaru UK may not be too impressed if they did!). There's also Alexanders at Boroughbridge, which is about 12 miles to the east.

Re housing, I used to let to a number of people who worked at the base. Although the houses nearby are very quaint old English dales houses and cottages which give the area its character, most Americans weren't too keen on the small size of them. As a result many settled for more modern properties on the edge of Pateley Bridge (Panorama Close?) plus villages such as Darley, Dacre and Summerbridge.

I also see a number of US cars in Harrogate at Jennyfield/ Killinghall Moor plus on the south side of Harrogate in Pannal. All are easy to get to Menwith.

Forgot to mention. For Motorsport Harewood Hill climb isn't far away, Croft is about an hour away and Various Motorcycle Events Such as the Scarborough Festival Moto-X and Motorcycle and car Trials events literally occur within a few miles of Menwith Hill. A round of the National Motorcycle Trials Championship will be at Brimham Rocks.

When i was younger living in Pateley Bridge there was an estate there that was literally half populated by americans who rented while they were working at Menwith Hill.. A lot of the surrounding villages, Summerbridge, Dacre, over to Burnt Yates are popular as well as Harrogate.

Really really interesting place, Menwith Hill.

Oh and the road from Greenhow to Blubberhouses, and Greenhow over to Grassington are good ones.

Nearly as good as the little rally stages round Two stoops! biggrin

Thank you everyone for the fast and informative responses beer

This will be my time in the U.K., the only overseas travel I've done was on my way to Iraq, so I'm am very excited to see Europe. I'll try and be more detailed with what I'm looking for.

Ok here is what I have to work with, I will be given a maximum 1150pounds for renting, and another 411 for utilities and such. Anything I don't use under the 1150 I won't see, so I'd like to move somewhere close to that price range. What I am looking for is a detached house with a Garage and atleast 2 bed rooms. I guess newer would be better as I would imagine there would be more space then older models. The closer I am to connivences the better although if the house was nice enough I would not be apposed to the country side, I currently live in the suburbs of DC and have quick access to a lot of stuff which I like.

Anyone recommend me a good site for housing?

^ Those shadows are cast by the 'two stoops' the roads round there are fantastic. At the top of the hill well sighted too.

www.rightmove.co.uk is a good site to start with -

here is a very rough search for you - excuse the huge link

http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-to-rent/find.h...

start from there really and search away - get yourself on google maps, stick in the different place names and see what you think. Lots of the areas of North Leeds are nice too.

Just to add - WRC Sales get some awful reviews on the Lancer Register.

Hi 4Walls, I'm guessing you are serving. When I did some work at Menwith Hill, many of the personnel had their cars shipped over from the US (I guess at a cheap rate?) and could fill up on base with 'gas' at US rates. Don't know if that is an option for you?

ETA: Nevermind, I see you only have your wifes car at the moment smile
