He seems to be making an awful lot of noise about BP, do you think he's out to destroy it? Seems to me, he's using it as his oppertunity to deflect critism of his presidency.

Do you think he's out to ruin one of our biggest Tax generators and pensions stalwarts?

Is this attack on one of the UK's biggest companies going to end in soured relations?

Could this impact the recovery for the UK?

How should the government respond?

Is Obama more interested in winning a political fight against BP than he is in actually helping sort out this issue?

Personally I think its a major issue that needed to be dealt with strongly, if it hadn't been he would have been severely criticised for it.

I think without his political pressure BP would have taken even more time to try and sort things. If he scores some points with voters for doing so then good on him. Its good to see he isn't afraid to take on the giant companies.

Yes, it ain't Yank.

Hopefully.

That is possible.

Couldn't possibly say wink

Becoming more obvious every time he opens his mouth.

Typical socialist. Ignore the facts and go for the smokescreen. Blaming foreigners is an easy way of ignoring the f*ck up he's making of his own job.

As stated above, he had little choice but to show some 'strength' in this matter.

But I think he has waded in too far now to the extent he has now effectively put his cards on the table. If he backtracks, the media will have him.

Therefore I can only see pain for BP operations in America.

Who knows what will happen.

At best I imagine BP will sacrifice Tony Haywood to placate the people who almost see him as a separate 'devil' in his own right following his comments the other week.

At worst, the US administration may put BP to the bottom of the pile when it comes to applications for licenses and contracts.

That would be enough to put BP (the name) out of business.

Yes you're right, I mean the rig has blown up , men are dead, oil is gushing out, I can't see why BP would really want to get a move on.......after all this recovery effort is very expensive why rush it when they could just kick back....

1. Seems like it. Also it's to the advantage of BP competitors some of which are US owned.

2. As No 1 above.

3. Quite possibly as prev commented in press and on other threads.

4. May well have some impact, not sure to what extent or how significant.

5. I'd like them to tell him to STFU but it's not going to happen. However someone should point out that the companies which quite possibly screwed up are American owned and quoted on NYSE. Also the prat should be reminded that when Occidentall blew up Piper Alpha in 1988 Maggie didn't go on an anti American rant, we just got on with the job of picking up the pieces, investigating what had gone wrong and making sure it never happened again, you know rather like BP and Hayward are trying to do.

But then it's USA where there is blame there is a claim.

Also I'd hope that it should be pointed out that BP are paying clean up crews a wage above minimum wage, whereas US authorities are not. In fact I'd not put it past the bastids to be claiming the BP rate from BP and paying minimum wage to the people who are doing the clear up, or in the case of volunteers no wage at all, but then it wouldn't be the first time US Govt have screwed over their own people.

6. Yes, he should STFU, there I've said it. I know it wasn't his administration but any country which can do to the people of New Orleans what they did after the hurricane is in no place to lecture anyone about disaster recovery.

Oh another thing, did I say he should STFU?

I dont get what Obama is on...

He just seems to be ranting and pointing the finger like a 3 yearold does over spilt milk...

Why WHY is he not having constructive talks with BP to try and resolve the issue together rather than stamping his little feet!

I quite liked Obama initially but he is seeming more and more like he is just a good public speaker and 'talks tough' but there doesn't seem to be more to him than that.
Or as those who pay attention said when he was elected; the black, US, Tony Blair.

I would imagine Jimbeaux places Obama somewhere in between Communist China and Bin Laden in his favourites list.

I doubt it. The Gulf of Mexico is not just an area that is unseen and you can forget about easily. The fact that Pensacola's beaches are mentioned so often should give you an idea of how public this spill is. Pensacola Beach from Fort Pickens down to Destin runs for 40 odd miles with sugar white sand, so if you think oil washing up on that shore would go un-noticed then you are mistaken.

You fail to understand that there are many areas on the Gulf that are national parks, for instance Perdido Key you have the Gulf Islands National Seashore - you don't just pollute a national park with impunity and think you are walking away from it. I know someone who has a Federal criminal record for "rallying" his car through a National Park one night.

The Yanks take their environment very seriously.

This is the Golden goose, I recently heard from a very senior BP employee that the US goverment are going to screw them into the ground, the example he gave me was a fisherman who was earning $1000 per month, the US goverment are making them pay him $1200 per day compensation.

WSJ has his measure

As does AN Ditchfield

"The Obama administration qualifies the Gulf of Mexico oil spill as the worst environmental disaster in history. In this they show a short memory and a dim grasp of arithmetic. In World War II five million tons of petroleum were cast into the Atlantic (about 32 million barrels of oil) from tanker ships sunk by Nazi submarines, in a period from 1942 to 1945, and with heavy concentration in the fateful year of 1942. Averaged over 1000 days the loss is equivalent to two to five times the oil now spilled into the Gulf of Mexico – every day – for the duration of the war."

Oops, Obama, don't let the facts get in the way of a rant as you claim your last ditch attempt to ram your climate change stuff through the house you prick.

But who were the people who actually may well have screwed up? Are they not American?

Why do we hear nothing from them? Busy hiding behind BP skirts?

The final analysis will be interesting, especially if it's found to be a US company who have screwed up.

The wrangling will go on for years, the worthless special relationship, such as it is, will be gone.
