I was breathalised this morning.........
Discussion
But passed with flying colours...
Pulled over on the way to work, along with many others during a "pro active" roadside check, to co-incide (I was told) with the forthcoming World cup...
Fortunately the reading said 0, due to my only tipple last night being a nightly Horlicks.....
I have occasionally had a couple of glasses of cheap plonk at home, around 9pm when staying in, but may decide to review this, as I certainly don't want to take any chances....If I go in a pub I stick to diet coke when driving, just not worth taking the risk (imo)
So the moral of the story is be careful out there...next time it could be you......

Are they "flagging up" certain cars for checks?
that's an interesting question... What would they flag up? New, old, expensive, cheap, common, rare? What does the average drunk take a spin in? 1999 Ford Focus??

Come on chaps. It's not that early in the morning. You should have twigged by now.

Certainly in the nations who are still within the World Cup, the World Cup related anti-drink-driving campaign would do well to target those drivers who are actively advertising the fact that they are World Cup Football Fans (and therefore by implication more likely to be World Cup Drinkers) by having flags all over their car.
Or Mums on the Gin.
Is that clearer?

In Taunton they were pulling over pretty much any young person they saw drive past in the evening and giving them a breath test. I wasn't pulled over but quite a few people i know were.

Then, if they have reason to believe you have had a drink, they can give you a breath test. Whereas in Australia sometimes they just block of a whole road and check everyone that drives into it. Can anyone confirm this?

I was under the impression that the police didn't have the power to simply pull people over and breath test them. Is that not the case? I understood that they would always need to either have a valid reason or fabricate one. Something along the lines of 'excuse me sir, you clipped a white line back there would you mind stepping out of the vehicle please?'
Then, if they have reason to believe you have had a drink, they can give you a breath test.
I thought that was the case too - but noticed in our local force over their Christmas campaign they'd tested hundreds of drivers and had just a few positive results. Seems ridiculous to me.Then, if they have reason to believe you have had a drink, they can give you a breath test.
Drinking in the evening when you need to drive the next day is going to get very iffy if the plans to reduce the limit do go through.

This is not going to be an issue. The drink drive limit is really relatively high. Your body processes roughly 1 unit of alcohol per hour, iirc. So still to be over the limit (i.e. more than 4 units in your system) the next morning, presuming you get in the car at 8am and stop drinking at 10pm, you would need to have drunk a minimum of 14 units (actually more as your body processes the alcohol from the first drink). That's seven large glasses of wine.So the moral of the story is be careful out there...next time it could be you......
