NOS Octane Booster.

Just noticed this in Halfrauds and was wondering if anyone had used it ? Is it safe for use on an RV8 and does it make that much difference.

I see they offer 'NOS Max Street Octane Booster - the highest legal boost for street use', along with 'NOS Octane Booster Racing Formula'. This apparently contains Nitro Methane & Unique Lubricants Specially Developed For High Performance Engines. It also states that this is designed 'for racing use only'. Why ?

eta, sorry I was disturbed by a customer !!

What I mean is, will you see any performance gains ? Is it possible to use too high an octane fuel in an RV8 ?
I religiously use V-Power in the car and have no problems with regards to performance. Just noticed it on the shelf, had a quick read and it started me wondering if these 'upto' 6 octane increases are genuine and/or beneficial to a healthy engine.

These maybe numpty questions, but ones I don't know the answer to !!

Complex question and I'm not the best one to answer this but IMHO if your
car was optimised for best fuel plus octane boost then I think a small advantage
could be had but you would be in trouble (pinking under load) if you ever did
could not get that fuel and octane boost.

The benefit would also be relatively small say 8~10 bhp max.

I think it's really designed as an addative for when you can only find ordinary
unleaded.. and you add a dose.

I looked at a lot of octane boosters to use in my Speed Six when on the track (to ensure I minimize detonation). The only one I decided I wanted to use was Millers.

Note the warnings for cat equipped cars.

As for performance gains - on the RV8 I doubt it unless your car is set up for a higher octane and you're running 95 RON.

I have extensively used Nitrous Formula octane booster in my Impreza during the time when there was no super unleaded for sale here. It worked well.

I never use booster in the TVR - it doesn't need it.

As above..... never needed it for the Griff,used NF in the impreza because it was mapped on optimax at the time and i got caught short down south when the fuel strikes were biting and needed to get back to Brum on normal juice.

I'm sure fifth gear did a test on this stuff, and found that it made no difference what so ever. They were testing in a Civic Type R, so might be different in a proper engine, .

Not sure exactly what they were testing as I only caught the end of the article, but it seemed to be the sort of stuff halfords sell as POWER BOOSTING SUPER JUICE, .

She will pink when running very hot in the summer, better safe than sorry in my books..

Acetone is your friend. I recall one hoon meeting up with someone who used to post a lot on here who bought acetone by the drum on ebay for a few quid then chucked in some (cant recall how much) every time he filled up.

Apparently this can give you easily 100+ octane. I know when I was following him the car smelled like a jet plane and had flames coming out the back.

I suspect that acetone will melt/rot the rubber bits of the fuel system in short order so try at your own risk.

They defiantly did as I saw a re-run of it the other day on the TV channel Dave. Through careful testing in a lab over precisely measured conditions it actually caused a loss in power of 2%. This was no particular one product either, they tested a good few of them !
