Expecting our first small one in the summer, and I'm considering getting a bigger car in the next year to cope with 'family life'.
Currently I have an Alfa 147 2.0 Selespeed, which I like a lot.
Ideally, it would be the same again, only bigger, which leads me to look at the 156.
I'm toying with the idea of the 156 GTA Sportwagon, but as only around 100 were brought into the UK, they are as rare as hen's teeth.

I also like a car to be interesting.
Most of the driving, these days, is motorway or fast A-road, either up to my folks in Scotland, or around France.

So, my starting list is soemthing like.

156 Sportwagon (V6 or GTA)
Subaru Legacy
Citroen C5 V6 Exclusive

What else could I look at?

Budget is up to around £7k
And I don't mind something that's relatively high-maintenance. I've always got one of the bikes if needs be.

Nice one.
I'll add it to the mix.
Did they stop making the Galant around 2003? Don't seem to see any newer ones around.

You say you like your current steed so just so that you know; one child does not require you to get an estate, or a Citroen. An Alfa 147 will more than suffice unless you're going to turn into a 'but think about the children' lunatic and roll around in a fully stocked mobile Mothercare.

I've tried fitting the buggy in the boot. It fits, but only just.

I'm thinking about the practicalities of that, especially since we're planning a 2 week driving holiday round France in September. Something a little bigger would be nice. (we normally bring back around 7 cases of wine, and that fills the boot as it is)

I agree, it's not essential, nor immediate, but I would like a bit more space.

As for the crack about Citroen's having owned a 2CV, a couple of BXs a couple of Xantias an XM and a C5, I find them less than boring. They may not be a "driver's car" but they are certainly different from the majority.

being a petrolhead, or indeed a piston head, isn't just about performance

I'm a huge believer that a 110 is a fantastic family car. Loads of room and space. Kids always love them. Up high and airy so nice to see out of and at stuff, also better to avoid travel sickness.

Seats are the right height to lift babies/seats in and out of out, no bending over causing bad backs.

On the plus side while not fast they are HUGE fun to drive. Also lots of scope to "improve" such as snorkels, lights, roof racks and such so as to keep any enthusiastic PH'er occupied.

Cheap and easy to work on and fix, generally very reliable. And according to the government via the DfT they are also the safest vehicle on the roads.

£7k ought to get you a Tdi example. Capable of over 30mpg on a run (25-28mpg more typical). smile

Ah, so you'll need the 'what car for a pre-op transexual' thread then?!

Sanatana would be just as cool and a newer vehicle for the same money. Also would be a good talking point... smile
