Looking into a purchasing a 944. Wondering if anyone knows the general running costs such as mpg and road tax band and which model is best in terms of economy as I will be using on a 35 mile round trip to work five days a week. Any advice and tips will be much appreciated. Thanks

Guard's red I think the colour is called, that's the way to do it! I don't know much myself, but I'd be looking at an S2 or a turbo I guess, and you'll get what you pay for, so don't buy a nail!

sorry I cant be more use!!

Good Choice thumbup

MPG will depend on the model, Turbo - mid/high teens, S2 - maybe high 20's/low 30's Tax should be around £190. Buy on condition with service history, very important. There is no such thing as a cheap Porsche. Check if Camchain and tensioners have been replaced, otherwise look to budget £1000-1500. Rot on the sills or around the rear end where leaks occur around light clusters and hatch seal. I'll say this again, RECENT service history at a reputable specialist is a must otherwise you'll be setting fire to ££££££.

I had one a few years ago, and am currently looking for another should never have sold it

Check the sunroof works, they are fixable but an arse to do

Again Cam Chain tensioner if its anything more than a 2.5 lux 8v (this isnt that bad a job to do yourself)

Generally just make sure everything works and it drives like it should, they are a doddle to work on

Good car and well built. But don't forget it has the potential to land you with large bills even though it's cheap to buy. Go in with your eyes open and you won't be disappointed.

PS Have you checked the price of a set of tyres?

There are a few different models, 2.5 8v, 2.5 16v (called 944s), 2.7 8v, 3.0 16v (s2) and 2.5 8v turbo (called turbo surprisingly available in 220 & 250bhp variants). The s2 & turbo have better brakes, spec etc but ALL are getting old now & checking for rust is very important. Generally bottoms of front wings & sills go first. The 16v models (including the 968) can suffer with cam chain wear, ultimately leading to (very expensive) camshaft sprocket failure. Look in the s/h for a cam inspection or recent chain & tensioner pad replacement. Cambelts need doing at regular intervals (cam & balance shaft belts). Fuel pipes can rot around the rear axle - expensive to do properly, clutches are very labour intensive also. A decent s/h is a good thing but it doesn't mean the owner carried out the repairs advised at a service. The most important thing to remember is that they were very expensive cars when new, just because they are cheap now doesn't make them any cheaper to maintain. Personally I'd go for the s2 as the turbo has too much lag for my liking, although when your 'on it' the turbo is a very rapid machine.
