Does anyone know it there are any, and if so, what they indicate?

I'm guessing they are quite low, as insurance premiums are very cheap considering the performance of most of them.

I wonder why that is, though? Obviously the mileage covered will be a lot lower than production cars, but I wonder if maybe people driving kits are a bit more aware of their surroundings, and more to the point, other traffic, when they are on the road.

...And of course they will also predominantly be used in fine weather, in daylight hours, by people who are (on the whole) more aware of their car's capabilities and mechanical condition.

I think also your perception of danger really changes when you take you kit car for a drive. Also the fact that you have usually gone out specifically for a drive, that must do wonders for your concentration compared to cruising home on auto pilot after a hard day .

Agreed it would be interesting to see some reliable data regarding kit car related incidents.I suspect that compared to motorcycles they are very safe ,despite the compact dimensions(unlike modern production cars)and lightweight construction methods generally employed in kitcars, one other factor could be explained by the phrase:-
"makers aren't breakers" ie after investing substantial time and money in a project, the builder is hardly likely to damage the fruits of his labour intentionally, the relatively small mileage travelled is also a major factor as very few serious collisions occur in the garage!

yea, maybe theft plays a part to, whilst not unheard of there not unless broken the easiest of cars to sell on stolen ?

I must agree the insurance premium I pay is ridiculously low for a car with such performance.

When I insured my first BEC in 03 one of the only stipulations was did it have a "cosworth" engine bizzarely. This was due to theft of cosworths back in the day, but I know of only one stolen kit car (Kara RS200 with a cosworth engine!!) I doubt any lists exist to kitcar accidents, maybe we can start our own! I'll go first, I wrote a Fury Fireblade off by Aquaplaning through a French Motorway Armco in a tunderstorm at 50mph.

Would have thought there are a fair few (single car) accidents that arent reported as the cars are repaired by the owners too. This would keep the figures lower.

True, it is in fact quite hard to write a kitcar off if you are prepared to do the repairs yourself, and as many owners built them they can re-build them quite easily. Whatever the reason, I am glad they are cheap to insure!

Would also suggest that the owners are in good enough condition, after the accident, to be able and willing to do that.

Absolutley. I've been presently surprised at the condition of a few of the guys on LB who have been in accidents and walked away. Shows that inertia makes a big difference when you hit stuff!

I love that colour scheme. Have you got a pre-accident pic?

If it helps, a friend of mine has only had one accident in her driving life of a couple of years.

That involved driving my BMW straight into the front of my Phoenix (stupid bint)!!!

So as far as she's concerned, kit car to production car ratio is 50/50!

There have been a few involving GTM Libras and considering the total number of cars built I would suggest that the insurance companies may be loading policies. cant quote numbers at you tho'

Seconding this. I'd also like to see it pre-accident. cloud9

Kit car insurance is indeed low, for the reasons stated above. However, I have just recently added to the statistics frown

Fortunately I think the car is rebuildable, after having stripped it down the other day. I just hope it doesn't affect my premium too much...

Since Lee's away hooning around Europe (I think) I've nicked this pic from his FaceBook.

Nice to see that the bike you ran into didn't come out of it too badly.

I've broken three. paperbag (Only two were my fault and I was out of pocket each time.)

I publicly apologise for any increase to people's premiums.

I promise to try my best not to do it again.
