Chassis paint

Hi all,what's the best chassis paint to use,is it por 15 if so where is best place to buy it? many thanks

I used por15 on mine and have to say it seems like top stuff and would fully reccomend it. I bought mine from Holden at www.holden.co.uk and received a good service with good tech advise on how to use it. HTH

Frost are another good supplier, just don't browse too much, it gets expensive

I bought my 'hard nose' white paint from frosts. And alot of it. But I did get some shoddy customer service from them in the end. Regardless of the small fortune I spent with them. If you can get it from else where, I'd use the alternative.

Used epoxymastic from Rustbuster which is a two pack epoxy paint, not sure how this compares to POR15. Have been happy with the results and three and a half years later, though not pretty the paint is still in good nick.

If you are painting onto bare metal (clean or rusty) I'd recomend POR15, and use their Metal Prep solution as well. It etches clean metal and kills off rust. POR15 cures by exposure to moisture and works by forming a rock hard impenterable protective coating so no further rust will occur (I'm begining to sound like an advert). It's good stuff.

Anyone used Deox-C? I remember seeing something about it on here when someone did their chassis/wishbones

Yes it's great stuff, if you can get the part off & leave it in a bath of the stuff it's even easier. The gel works ok but needs a few goes & a wire brush to get all the rust off. I don't like anything that you paint over rust. I followed the instuctions for por15 & used it on my beetles frame head for a test a couple of years ago. The rust is just bubbling up like any other paint now. But if you remove the rust first you'll be ok.

Their metal prep does kill off the rust but it costs a hell of a lot more than DtoxC & is much harder to use as it's like water so runs off & costs too much to make bath from. I uesd it as a prep for clean steel but found the por15 chipped off very easily after & once it started comming off it was like latex in big sheets coming off... I think if you roughed up the surface first it would stick much better though.

This stuff is good, it gives a much thicker coating than por15. But still don't paint it over rust if you want a permant job. I used it on my Nissan for another test (wanted to test them before using on the cerb) It's too thick & strong to let the rust bubble up but I found the whole lot came off the rusty patch I'd painted it over when I gave it whack (by mistake) the stuff over good metal stayed ok. I did give the clean metal a good key before using this stuff though.
