As the title says - been offered a deal on a 1999 S80 T6
Does anybody have one?
Are they any good?
Anything to watch out for?

Many thanks

To quote from a recent thread on T5D5;

they eat everything, and are renowned for expensive failures of every module... "

I think they're very nice, until things go seriously wrong.

Ive had an 03 one for a few months. No problems yet although a lot heavier on fuel than advertised! Having come from a 3.2 Alfa 156 GTA thats saying something! Lovely cabin and feels very solid. Very quick too in a refined sort of way. I had read about the so-called pre-2001 problems so i steered clear.

Oh well!

My last car was a XK8 and before that it was a Cerbera so I suppose I'm used to taking a chance.
I love the shape of the T6 and the interior is to die for so here goes!!!

I'll keep the forum informed of my progress and hope I dont hear the words "we told you so"

I heard all these doom-mongers before i bought my Alfa but i had my heart set on it. It never gave me any problems other than normal wear+tear + i dont regret it for a minute. I say , if youre getting the car at a good price you can afford to throw a few quid at it wink

it is a very good price and the car is mint with a first class service history. The performance is meant to be excellent - was just hoping other owners might chip in.

I'll give it a go and see what happens
thanks all for the feedback

had one for about 7 months ...nice cars, lots of car for the dosh, great exec saloon ....but it seemed every month something else would break, usually an electronic box that volvo wanted £500 for and there wasnt any other source

after Id spent 60% of the cars value in 6 months keeping it going, I got rid

on the way to trade it in, the alternator failed ....

get the newest you can - the later shape was a lot better apparently

...we are still fans of the marque and are on our 4th Volvo workhorse - for the last 2 years an S60D5 ...zero problems, doing 20K miles a year avg 45Mpg and its had a set of tyres, a few oil changes and some pads...great car .just shows how different they can be smile

In fairness to Volvo on this one, those Bosch alternators are bloody unreliable anyway!

Parts are crazy money - example, T5 MAF sensor - Bosch Part approx £160, T6 MAF sensor - Denso part approx -£330.

The straight six Volvo lump has always been a pain in the arse in my opinion, the early 960 lumps were horrendous for eating cambelts. The best thing Volvo did was to lop off a cylinder and create the inline 5 lump (Yes I know they were both designed at the same time)

Personally I'd avoid the S80 altogether, why you'd want a T6 over a chipped T5 is a mystery to me as they really are not as fast as their 280bhp suggests - If you want a lary oddball volvo get a T4 S40 - crazy little car and MASSIVE wheel spinny out of control fun!

Yes, I wanted an S80 T6 too.

But after doing my research, I bought a V70 T5. Everything I read about them was bad. In particular, the autoboxes are supposed to be very unreliable. I think it transpired that cramming a FWD traverse I6 and an autobox in side by side was quite a task, and it needed a specially designed narrow box, a 4 speed GM unit IIRC.

TBH if you have been offered a really good deal on it, then just play by ear like you would on any other 11 year old car. Check everything carefully, and let us know how you get on. Just be aware that a lot of people have reported that these cars are troubled and can be expensive to fix.

Well so far so good.
Picked it up yesterday and first impressions are good.
Drives so smoothly and the power delivery is very nice indeed. Not the spritelyist car Ive ever driven but on the motorway it was quite outstanding!! Very Very comfortable and everything to hand. Lovely to drive.

Got home and without a hand book I have started to work out how everything works. It has a satnav!!! TV screen pops up but it has no map discs in the boot changer - Does anybody know where I can get hold of some??

Will keep the forum informed of progress - I still have the words "We told you so" echoing in the back of my head smilesmilesmile

i have the pop-up satnav too but no discs either. Ive been told the latest ones are £120 from dealers. To be honest, i dont need it in NIreland anyway + its more use as a TV anyway with the World cup on! If you have any other queries let me know + we can compare notes. Dont know what youve drove before but apart from an Audi S6 ive owned the T6 has been the worst on fuel ive ever owned but still like driving/owning it

What were the files you downloaded? If they were ISO files, use something like Imgburn to burn them.

TBH I'm not sure exactly which ones you need, I don't have the sat nav on my car. frown

They're only a google away, have a browse.

We've had a 1999 S80 2.4 for a couple of years and it's been pretty good. The alarm has packed up so I've ignored it, the front suspension arms needed replacing which was a bit pricey and it's needed a new 02 sensor which was expensive, but...

It's never left us stranded
It's a great quiet cruiser
It's got loads of room inside
It's cheap

Dunno about the 6 cylinder ones, but shirely lots of the car (like most of the electronics) is the same?
