A year ago I bought a fully-spec'd Mondeo 2.0 Ghia X automatic for £500. I have spent a penny on it other than fuel and air fresheners. Today it passed its MOT without so much as an advisory.

Sometimes with sheds, you just get lucky. That Mondeo is the best car I've ever bought and bangernomics is awesome.

That's all. Carry on.

bought my Celsior/LS400 for £500 quid with 56,000 miles on the clock.

Needed new disks and pads, but has performed flawlessly for me for 2 years now.

Meanwhile my mate has paid £10,000 for a 1.2 ford fiesta with half the features. False economy if you ask me smile

After pissing away much of my earnings in last 10 years or so, I'm seriously considering bangernomics.

Any tips?

I don't get the ls400 thing though. What does it do, 15mpg???

If I did do it, I would have to get something slightly interesting. Old 205gti perhaps?

Is that still classed as bangernomics?

In the case of a Mondeo with an automatic box, you got very lucky indeed. It has to rank as one of the most unreliable transmissions fitted to a modern car.

205 Gti is an enthusiast's car, so I think you'd care for it too much for it to be just an old banger.

True.

Sod bangernomics then.

Cheap enthusiast motoring it is then.

They're actually pretty good. Low 20's round town. 30mpg on a run is very possible.
An old work collegue had one and was regularly getting those kind of figures.

No, because without a doubt it will need money spending to keep it on the road. They are quite a desirable car with the decent ones demanding a surprising amount of money, and the really cheap ones are almost certain to be hanging. If you buy a nice one, would you really want to drive it into the ground?

Bangernomics works on buying solidly build cars that have suffered horrendous depreciation e.g. the Lexus, Saab 9000 etc. Cars that are most likely to stay functional with minimal expenditure (aside from fuel...).

Having done it properly in a 9000. 52k miles for £650 I'll tell you how I get on with the 205Gti concept.

I've got a very good feeling about the MR2 I've recently bought. Had it a month or so now, and the only issue I've managed to find is that you have to sometimes give it an extra nudge into 5th.

£670 with 6 months tax and a longer MOT. Really cannot fault it in any way!

the idea is that the car costs next to nothing so you can afford to hose a bit more £££ at the petrol cost
