...and it appears the number has been in use up until quite recently by a seemingly elder gentleman from the council estate a few blocks away. We've had a fair few missed calls on the phone whilst we've been out (Around 8 or 9 - Quite high considering this is our 2nd line and is only really for the broadband router/emergency phone.) Plus 2 messages. First message was a little boring, It was just concerning a complaint to a housing association about some out of control bush in the gentelmans rear entry.

The second message, however... was a little more interesting. It would appear his bush may of offended a neighbour. Language is NSFW/Children (Atleast i think it is.) Link to audio

Part of me says to call the phone company and try to get another number, The other part says it could be amusing to see what other calls we get for the old codger.

Good old recycled numbers. I'd keep it for the comic value smile

When we had a new phone line put in and a recycled number allocated to us we kept on getting people phoning for bouncy castle hire.

We had so many enquiries I actually priced up buying a bouncy castle ! It was only the fact that we both work full time that really stopped me. I reckon we would have done a roaring trade.

Even though I'm ex directory I get obscene amounts of calls per day for the previous tenant for telemarketers.

We pretty much dont answer the phone any more since it is mainly used for broadband.

When the phone company decided our number was too desirable (ended in 2000) and took it off us they gave us a number that had been in use the previous day! (I'm in the US so different over here). The other issue was that it was linked to the previous owners door intercom. So, every time someone pressed their door bell our phone rang. One morning the phone rang and the person said "Fed Ex" I looked out of the window and discovered that the Fed Ex guy was a couple of doors down. That must have been one of the shortest distance phone number relocations ever.

They were allowed to take the number off you? That's not cricket!

Bought a flat in 2003, was re-issued the previous owners phone number who was the then skipper of Hearts football team. Had loads of interesting calls and messages, but the best was when he called the number and asked why I was answering. I politely explained that he didn't live there any more. Spacker. smile

I work on an IT Service desk and we came back in after the Xmas break last year to a long rambling message from a lady who lived in Spain apologising for not sending a Christmas Card...

Makes me wonder how brain dead some people are... when you called (our) number, you were presented with a long message about who we were and out of hours support etc...

Some people just dont listen!

I recently got a new Virgin Media line and it seems they recycle their numbers very quickly, I think it must have only just been relinquished because the callers said "oh yeah they just moved house", one guy kept leaving messages wondering if I was going to squash etc.

One interesting call we keep getting at work: we own a domain name which is something like "widgetservices.co.uk" (but two very common dictionary words), however there is a company called "the widget services company", and on people's bank statements the name is truncated to "widget services co". So they google this, get our site and call us. Not only do they not recognise the name of the company I suggest they are actually looking for (which they should, given the nature of the business), they seem amazed that we aren't that company "because your name is on my bank statement".

When we moved into our house in 08 we used to get the odd call of "Can i get a large pepperoni pizza and a can of coke" At first i thought it was stupid kids, pranking people, and it hasn't happened for ages, but last week i had a call

"Hi, it's Sharon from vision express, can i have a portion of garlic bread please?"
Had a similar thing in an office where I used to work... The Md's private line in his office had been advertised in Yellow Pages as the local Dominoes, we quite often used to pretend to take the orders as we knew that by the time they called back to chase, we would have left for the day.....

One of our old telephone numbers were 2 digits reversed from a bank

Ours was 4571**, the bank was 4517**

Used to get people mis-dialling all the time asking for accounts and so on. Used to just ask people to hold and then leave them for 10 or 20 minutes before hanging up

The number we have now is only a digit away from a local pizza outlet.
Occasionally we get the odd pisshead ringing on a weekend, the first couple of times it was annoying, now I just take their order and tell them it'll be within the hour.

Twenty odd years ago when I bought my first house I was given the number of a defunct engineering firm, the number was still on a board outside their old premises half mile down the road, as well as Yellow Pages et al.
I requested a number change, started getting nuisance calls within a couple of hours, gave my mother my new number, said she recognised it.
Turned out it was her friends old number changed two days previously because of dodgy calls.
Finally got a number that didn't have history, started releasing new numbers for the area.

Used to get calls late at night for the local kebab/pizza takeaway, only 1 number different so an easy mis-dial. One night a bloke kept calling, after telling him 3 times i'm not who he wants and please stop pressing re-dial, I just took his order (and anyone else after that). Never heard from him again that night.
