Car broken into...
Discussion
My window was smashed and they took tonnes of stuff (I've just finished moving house and hadn't emptied it yet.
Problem here is the old radio was knackered, so I'd replaced it. Naturally I hadn't got an original Rover unit, instead opting to pop down halfords and part with £80 for a CD player.
The question is this; even though I didn't claim (at all) the insurance company now know about this. Will the non-disclosure of the different head-unit affect future claims?
I ask because on Watchdog tonight they looked at a case where a man's income-protection insurance was cancelled because he hadn't told them about a knee operation he once had, even tho he was claiming over a heart condition!
I can see an analogy here, even if I put the old (knackered) unit back in.
If I subsequently crash my car into a rolls/lambo/concorde, can the insurance company point at this non-disclosure and say 'tough'?
As I understand it the non-disclosures are held on a central database, so theoretically ANY insurer can access it. Even if I leave the current one, will this record stay with me?
If so, it has to be said, there's no point in me buying insurance ever again...
Anyone know the law on this?

I had heard the same, someone bought a car second hand, crashed it and there insurance was void - the person previous had installed a spoiler (from memory it was a "metro" with a "metro GT" spoiler or similar).
I haven't made any mods to the car, but if I do, you can be damned sure the insurance will know about it via recorded delivery!

There's no point claiming for it, as they'd charge me a £150 excess and dock me 2 years no claims.
A bit crazy, as I've now repaired all the damage for £84...
All my stereo stuff in my last car was covered upto a £1000 as long as i kept the receipts.
I seem to remember a story about a guy who crashed his maserati and the insurance wouldn't pay out as it wasn't s standard head unit in it

You can claim for glass without losing your NCD. However it usually has a £40/50 clams excess, so probably wasn't worth the hassle.
One question though - how do your insurance know about your "non-standard" stereo if you didn't claim?
You have to declare any incidents (or else they can invalidate future claims that way).
They've been great about it anyway, phoned them up, they said they wouldn't hold it against me, and if I retrofit the same unit again they'll cover it for free on the policy.
To notch methinks.
As mentioned above, £50 excess on the window, but I got one for £5 from a scrapyard and fitted it myself, so no point claiming.
