Really getting irritated by this now.

Another debt collectors letter demanding £202 - I have absolutely no idea what it is for and Paypal won't speak to me as it is 'now in the hands of debt collectors'.

Am I not allowed to know why they are chasing me!?

This one gives me 7 days to pay it, IF it turns out I will have to pay it I really don't want it spiraling in terms of cost and costing me a fortune!!

God damn Paypal...

Is it possible that someone has issued a chargeback on an item you have sold and PayPal are now looking to retrieve the funds from you?

Would I have known about that before now though?

I've literally not used it for ages. In fact, I may not even have the email address that is associated with the account so I wouldn't have a clue.

If someone has done that... am I screwed?

Chargebacks can be processed weeks or months after a listing has finished - Here is some more information in regards to chargebacks: https://www.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/?&cmd=xpt/Ma...

Can you find out which e-mail address you have registered with PayPal by giving them a call? Also, can PayPal look through your records to see who you owe this money to and for what item? Do you have a name for the supposed debt collectors?

Someone with more eBay/PayPal knowledge might be able to help further. I was under the impression that if a chargeback is processed against you and PayPal cannot retrieve the funds from your bank/cc account, then they will issue a refund and pursue you for the cash in the form of debt collectors. However I've also read that PayPal shouldn't do this, as technically it is a loan without a signed contract ... or summat biggrin

Paypal have done nothing wrong.

Sounds like your account has gone to negative balance, probably due to a chargeback, and they're now chasing to get their money back.

It'll probably fizzle out at this stage, but if you properly want to sort it, give them a call to find out which account, and which transactions it relates to.

If they can't or won't tell you, then they haven't got a leg to stand on with the debt collection.

You can't just 'demand' a debt without evidence of what it's for. If this is their evidence in court, it'll be thrown out anyway.

Tell the debt collector the amount is in dispute, they then (effectively) can't really take it any further with you directly. It'll go to court (if they bother, which they probably won't), and unless they've got some proper evidence, it'll be found in your favour.

Seriously, no - I think I posted about it before when the first letter came through however many months ago but I didn't have the time or inclination to sift through hundreds of posts to find it again.

I think ignore will be the best policy on this one for now. I do wonder if the 'in dispute' line is the best one to take here? Simply because, as per these parking invoice type things, it alerts them to the fact that you are taking it seriously and they realise they have 'hooked' a fish so to speak.

If Paypal won't tell me what it is for then surely I can't be expected to do anything?

Tell them to poke it. I still get calls today from 2 chargebacks from back in 2004. Tried to be reasonable and explain to them but they weren't having any of it. Am on my iPhone at the moment but when home I'll search out some info for you. You really have nothing to worry about. No bailiffs will turn up, credit rating will remain intact and they have no more power than telephone threats.
